David Tennant will play Alexander Litvinenko in an upcoming drama. Litvinenko will tell the story of the defector who fled Russia for the UK after shining a light on the country's “mafia state.” In 2006, he was poisoned in London and died. On September 21, 2021, the European court of human rights ruled that Russia was responsible for the murder, though this decision took years of determined efforts from police and Litvinenko’s widow Marina.
Per Deadline, Tennant will take on the role in a four-part series for ITV and Nordic Entertainment Group. The drama will also focus on the charismatic Marina, to be played by The Blacklist’s Margarita Levieva. Marina attracted attention in the British press as she fought tirelessly to have her husband’s killers named and for Britain to acknowledge Russia’s role in the murder. The series will be written by George Kay, best known as a writer for Killing Eve. Kay previously worked with Tennant on the police procedural anthology series Criminal: UK.
Litvinenko is part of David Tennant’s pivot to dramatic roles following his breakthrough performance in Doctor Who. Tennant’s tenth incarnation of the iconic Time Lord is often voted as the fans' favorite ever. His time in the TARDIS saw huge success for the BBC series, with the show launching the spin-off series Torchwood. Russell T. Davies, who helmed Doctor Who during Tennant’s tenure, shocked fans by announcing he would return as showrunner in 2023. Tennant’s other roles after Who included DI Alec Hardy in Broadchurch and Kilgrave in Jessica Jones.
