Rogue is Officially Replaced As The X-Men's Best Power Thief

Warning: Spoilers for X-Men #3!

When it comes to Marvel’s X-MenRogue is a staple member of the team that has some wild power-thieving abilities, but another mutant, Synch, has just replaced her as the best power thief the X-Men currently have on the roster. And considering Rogue is usually the first hero to pop up in fans’ minds as the main mutant who can effectively take others’ powers and repurpose them for herself, Synch stepping up and replacing her is a huge development for them both.

Knocked out of her number one spot but still irreplaceable as a core member of the newly elected mutant team, X-Men #3, by Gerry Duggan and Pepe Larraz, sees the sudden return of the highly intelligent villain called The High Evolutionary, a crazed geneticist who has experimented on and tormented his fair share of animals, humans, and mutants alike — Rogue included. Arriving planet-side offering a twisted deal that would essentially sterilize all of humanity in an attempt to stop them from ruining the Earth, The High Evolutionary’s offer is one that the X-Men barely have to think about.

Rejecting The High Evolutionary’s ridiculous deal, the X-Men launch a full-blown attack on a god-like being who immediately throws his own band of genetically altered minions back at them. Paired up with fellow X-member, Sunfire, Synch goes on the offensive by “synching” with Sunfire’s flame-based power set while Rogue takes a decidedly more brutal approach on the ground below, right away showing how Synch has replaced Rogue as the team’s best power-sapping mutant.

Scorching The High Evolutionary with a combo attack, the villain immediately retaliates by taking out Sunfire relatively easily but also gives Synch a compliment in regards to his own substantial power set at the same time. Saying, “I thought Rogue’s ability to mimic mutant powers was impressive — but you are more powerful by no small magnitude,” Synch is called out as a better wielder of Rogue’s powers by a bad guy that knows a thing or two about power.

Able to mimic any ability he can grab from the people around him and then master it accordingly (sometimes even using said power better than the individual he copies it from), Synch replacing Rogue as the top power thief is a huge feat, especially since Rogue isn’t exactly a pushover when it comes to her powers. Usually needing to make physical skin on skin contact with someone to take their abilities, Rogue is an extremely effective and efficient mutant on her own, but with Synch utilizing his copy abilities a bit more than Rogue as of late (who’s acting more like a wrecking ball at the moment), it’s a no-brainer as to why Synch has taken her spot.

So although having two power thieves on the team isn’t necessarily a bad thing, there can only be one that’s the best, and for now, that’s Synch. Rogue may always be the most well-known mutant mimic on the X-Men team, but considering Synch is still a relatively unknown hero to most casual X-fans, he’s got a lot of ground to cover before matching her popularity.
