Baby Yoda is still the greatest mystery of The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm managed quite an accomplishment with Baby Yoda, managing to keep the character's very existence a secret until the first episode of The Mandalorian season 1 streamed on Disney+. The effect was probably better than even Lucasfilm could have hoped, with the Child becoming a hit with viewers.
The Mandalorian season 2, episode 5 finally began to reveal the truth about the Child. Baby Yoda's real name is Grogu, and the adorable infant was raised in the Jedi Temple. According to Ahsoka Tano, Grogu was rescued from the Temple during the Jedi Purge and hidden away. But, although the first years of Baby Yoda's life have now been explained, the rest remains a mystery. "Then his memory becomes… dark," Ahsoka told Din Djarin, reading Grogu's memories with the Force. "He seemed lost. Alone."
Ahsoka's account hints at a dark story occurring in the background of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. As seen in the prequel trilogy, the Jedi Purge began when Anakin Skywalker ransacked the Temple and slaughtered the Younglings. Presumably one of the Jedi sensed what was happening, and rather than resist they successfully rescued the one surviving Youngling. But who was this Jedi, why did they choose to save Baby Yoda in particular, and what happened to them afterwards? Baby Yoda's story doesn't pick up until decades later, in The Mandalorian season 1, when Din Djarin found him being protected by a heavily-armed group of mercenaries on the planet Arvala-7. So who has been protecting Grogu all these years, and who has been paying the mercenaries all this time?
More answers may yet be forthcoming in The Mandalorian season 2. Ahsoka has told Mando to take Grogu to the planet Tython, site of an ancient Jedi Temple. "Place Grogu on the seeing stone at the top of the mountain," she told Din Djarin. "Then Grogu may choose his path. If he reaches out through the Force, there’s a chance a Jedi may sense his presence and come searching for him." Given it is reasonable to assume Baby Yoda was rescued by a Jedi, it is possible his savior is still out there, and that they will be the one to respond to his call in the Force.
Of course, it's also entirely possible Lucasfilm will take their time with further reveals. Back in September, Moff Gideon actor Giancarlo Esposito openly talked about The Mandalorian seasons 3 and 4, hinting at the sheer scale of Lucasfilm's plans. Rather than resolve all the mysteries in one season, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau would be wise to keep Baby Yoda a mystery for now - one they continue to unravel as the story of The Mandalorian goes on.
