In response to a lengthy Reddit post sharing the details of the upcoming Season 2 of Rocket League, developer Psyonix confirms that the game's split screen issues on the Nintendo Switch will be fixed in the update. Rocket League recently hit 1 million concurrent players for the first time since its release in 2015, and has been doing very well since it became free to play in September this year. With a port released on all platforms, cross-play was introduced, too, and although Switch owners were only able to get the game in 2017, it quickly became popular on the console.
Fans were therefore furious when Psyonix removed the split screen function from the Switch version of Rocket League, although the developer promised a fix soon. The option to add a guest in the local multiplayer mode had disappeared as part of an update, and it is still unclear as to whether this was an accident or a choice made by the developer. However, the need for a subscription to a Nintendo Switch Online account was removed, as well as the need for a PS Plus subscription on PS4 and the game became free-to-play on the Epic Games Store, so these players can download the game for free and play on the online multiplayer mode with friends and enemies alike.
The big announcement of Rocket League Season 2 came from user Psyonix_Devin on Reddit, a member of the development team. They detail lots of great things to look forward to for Season 2, which will be dropping on December 9. However, this tidbit of information about the split screen issue on Switch was addressed by Psyonix_Devin in a comment after somebody asked whether the issue is fixed, and Psyonix_Devin answered that it will be fixed with the arrival of the new Season.
The announcement told fans all they need to know about the Season that will be rolling in soon. There is a large emphasis on a musical theme, which could be anticipated with the partnership between Psyonix and DJ Kaskade, who has produced an entire EP just for Rocket League. There will also be a new arena featuring Kaskade's music, called Neon Fields, and it looks just like a large, very luminous concert venue.
The whole of Season 2 looks very exciting, with new arenas, cosmetics that pulse in time with the music, and of course a famous music maker equipping Rocket League with some souped-up beats. Bringing back the split screen for local multiplayer on the Switch makes sure that as many people as possible give the game a try, be it on their own or on a friend's Nintendo Switch. The player base, which is already huge, can only grow bigger, making it easy to find a match whenever the want arises.
Rocket League is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
