American Horror Story Season 10: What The New Contortionist Clue Means

American Horror Story season 10 may be delayed, but that doesn't mean creator Ryan Murphy's clues about the upcoming theme are. Murphy recently announced the addition of a brand new and terrifying cast member — contortionist Spencer Novich. Let's take a look at how his casting announcement provides further hints to the theme of American Horror Story season 10.

AHS has made a name for itself over the past decade by capitalizing on fear-figures. The horror anthology series has covered everything from killer clowns, to witches, to the antichrist himself. Murphy is known for creating an elaborate world around each of these figures every season, but the particular theme tends to be a surprise right before the newest season is released. However, given that Novich's casting was one of Murphy's carefully chosen clues to release beforehand, fans can expect that he will play a key part in the upcoming season.

Ever since Murphy began dropping hints for AHS season 10, fans have been speculating as to what everything could mean. Thanks to Murphy's multiple Instagram posts, theories have begun to circulate about the show's theme. As those rumors begin to zero in on the new season's location, it's become clear how Novich's unique skillset can come into play.

Fans are becoming increasingly certain that American Horror Story season 10 will take place in an aquatic horror setting, as Murphy has teased images of a beach and the ocean. He's also shared two images that aren't quite as straight forwards. One promotional image depicted a wide-open mouth with razor-sharp teeth. A person is tattooing "AHS 10" directly on that person's tongue. Some have speculated that tattoos and unusual physical characteristics are a callback to the horror series' circus-themed season Freak Show. However, since it's fairly clear that the new season will take place seaside, those teeth are likely a homage to a brand new kind of horror — sharks.

Murphy likely won't go with something as ordinary as a shark for his main source of horror, but it could be a hint that whatever (or whoever) is terrorizing his newest cast of characters comes from the ocean. Murphy even marked one of his AHS 10-themed Instagram posts with an ominous caption: "Things are beginning to wash up on shore..." The show isn't afraid to lean into weird, supernatural elements of horror. The ocean-based horror could very well be some mysterious and terrifying creature that arises from the sea. It's been said before that scientists don't know much about creatures that live at the bottom of the ocean; this is why a great many Lovecraftian horror stories, for example, are so effective. Murphy's twisted imagination can easily come up with a few ideas of what lurks down there. Who better to play a menacing deep-sea creature in American Horror Story season 10 than a contortionist like Novich?
