Empire Of Sin Director Promises Fixes For Launch Issues And DLC

The director of Empire of Sin has promised dedicated post-launch support to improve the game, as well as DLC down the line. Empire of Sin is a recent strategy title which puts the player in the shoes of a mob boss in 1920s Chicago, at the height of Prohibition. The game blends grid-based combat with deep, complex 4X management gameplay to give players a chance to take the city by storm.

Unfortunately, as enticing as the prospect of ruling Chicago is, the game hasn't had a stellar launch. Reviews of the game, including Screen Rant's own, are largely middling. The game's mechanics are better in theory than in execution, and while there's certainly plenty of fun to be had taking over rackets in a hail of gunfire, it's bogged down by a number of small but persistent issues. These include an overwhelming amount of diplomatic options which are largely irrelevant to the casual player since the game only ends when all the other mob bosses are dead. Gang wars also have a tendency to slip into tedium, since much of the combat is done through faceless goons instead of the player's own dedicated party.

But with all that said, Empire of Sin does have a lot of potential, and director Brenda Romero definitely hasn't stopped believing that. The developer took to Twitter to promise additional support for the game as it continues on. According to Romero, the team is dedicated to making the best possible version of Empire of Sin, and, to quote her, "that's why the feedback we have been getting from you is so important to us." Romero is promising patches to be rolled out over the coming weeks and months which are set to improve the overall game experience. She also confirmed that DLC packs are on the way, promising that players will go places and meet new people. Unfortunately, concrete details about the DLC are yet to arrive.

There's definitely still a chance for Empire of Sin to rise from its current status as a largely average title. The industry is full of surprising post-launch redemption stories like this. No Man's Sky is a particularly prominent example. When the game launched in 2016 is broadly considered a failure, a massive waste of potential with little to no content for players to explore. But over the four years since, developer Hello Games has been hard at work adding in new features, gameplay, and content, going so far as to keep promises made before launch that were broken when the initial release came out. If a legendary failure like No Man's Sky can redeem itself so completely, there's plenty of hope for Empire of Sin.

Empire of Sin is clearly a labor of love. A lot of admiration both for historic gangsters and for classic game design are evident in every facet of the game. And there is plenty of fun to be had with. Romero Games has a very good basis to work off of in order to get Empire of Sin to be the best version of 1920s Chicago that it can be. And hopefully there'll be a lot of aspiring crime lords along for the ride.
