Netflix drama miniseries Stateless features a number of recognizable stars, including Yvonne Strahovski and Jai Courtney, in a moving story about life in an Australian immigration detention center. Inspired by a true story, Stateless follows four different characters who end up at Barton Detention Centre, a holding camp for asylum seekers hoping to be granted a visa to stay in the country.
Created by Tony Ayres, Elise McCredie and Cate Blanchett, Stateless is partly based on the real life case of Cornelia Rau, an Australian who was placed in immigration detention after claiming to be a German woman called Anna who had come to the country illegally. Despite the obvious holes in her story, the suspicion that "Anna" was an undocumented non-citizen led her to be held in a women's prison for months before being transferred to an immigration detention facility. Cornelia spent almost a year locked up before her true identity was discovered.
Stateless uses the Cornelia Rau scandal as a jumping-off point for a drama that examines the flaws in Australia's mandatory detention policy, and how so many asylum seekers fell through the cracks and were left languishing in detention - often for years on end. Here's a guide to the cast and characters of Stateless, and where you know the actors from.
Yvonne Strahovski plays a character called Sofie Werner, who is based on Cornelia Rau. Sofie is an air stewardess struggling with her family's pressures for her to live the life they want, who turns to a cult called GOPA in hopes of finding freedom. Instead she experiences a terrible trauma at the hands of one of the cult leaders and is cruelly ejected from the group. Seeking to escape Australia, Sofie claims to be a German tourist who overstayed her visa, and asks to be deported to Germany. Instead, she ends up in immigration detention. Strahovski is best known for her roles as Serena Joy Waterford in The Handmaid's Tale, Hannah McKay in Dexter, and Sarah Walker in Chuck.
Fayssal Bazzi plays Ameer, a former teacher who escapes Afghanistan with his family and wants to build a new life for them in Australia. However, the journey proves difficult and tragedy strikes after Ameer is separated from his wife and two daughters. Finding himself at Barton Detention Centre, Ameer hopes to play by the rules and make a strong case to be granted a visa - but things become complicated when immigration officials start digging into the circumstances of his travel to Australia. Bazzi is best known for his roles as Abel in Australian series The Common, Cop Thommo in Top of the Lake, and Farouk in the 2019 modern adaptation of Measure for Measure.
Asher Keddie plays Clare Kowitz, a bureaucrat who is sent to be the representative for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) at Barton Detention Centre. Clare soon finds herself in over her head between the ever-rising pile of case files, protests and media attention, detainees on the roof, and incidents of brutality from the security guards at Barton. Keddie is best known for her roles as Dr. Carol Frost in X-Men: Origins - Wolverine, Nina Proudman in Offspring, and Julia Jackson in Love My Way.
Jai Courtney plays Cam Sandford, a family man who leaves his dead-end, low-paying job for a new career as a security guard at Barton Detention Centre. Though he initially tries to be friendly and kind to the detainees, Cam finds himself pressured to fall in line with the other guards. With his empathy and guilt over his role in the detention system clashing with his desire to continue providing a good life for his wife and kids, Cam's mental health starts to fray. Courtney is best known for his roles as Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad, Eric in Divergent, and Kyle Reese in Terminator Genisys.
