A new series of videos uses augmented reality to show what the PlayStation 5 console may look like standing next to a PS4 Pro and the Xbox Series X. While the fights over system specs and exclusive games are where players are going to be making their real decisions about which console to buy, their rumored sizes have also been a major source of debate.
Microsoft has been one step ahead of Sony when it comes to revealing its next-generation hardware, with Xbox Series X console details and game reveals coming before similar announcements about the PS5. Tech specs reveals have shown that the next-gen Xbox will have a power advantage over the PS5, but just how much of a difference that will make is still unclear. On the other hand, the first PS5 game reveal event went over much better than the Xbox Series X game showcase, which was so poorly received that Microsoft executives apologized for it afterward.
So far, Microsoft is the only console developer that’s revealed the physical size of its next-gen device, while fans are left guessing about the actual dimensions of the apparently huge PS5. One recent augmented reality video from Particular AR claims to show an accurate model of the PS5 standing next to a horizontal PS4 Pro, while another posted by Duuro Plays (but using the same AR app) shows the next-gen PlayStation next to the Xbox Series X. The PlayStation 5 looks absolutely massive next to the PS4 Pro, but seems a little more in scale next to the hefty Xbox Series X. The PS5 definitely has a few inches in height more than the Xbox Series X, but the Xbox is substantially wider, at least based on the AR renders.
It’s important to keep in mind that the AR renders aren’t coming officially from Microsoft or Sony, so they can’t be confirmed as completely accurate. Still, given the official specs from Microsoft and some detective work by users on the ResetEra forum estimating the PS5’s scale using its USB ports and disk drives, they should give a pretty good indication of how the next-gen consoles will look in a real-life setting.
For most people, the size of a console isn’t much of a consideration. Sure, a larger console is harder to move around, but in most cases, they stay tucked out of sight or at least stay put most of the time. Based on previous specs and the new AR renders, size might actually be a problem for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X owners, who will need to clear out a lot of shelf space to make room for the colossal consoles.
