Zack Snyder has a notorious relationship with Rotten Tomatoes, with a controversial filmography that often splits audiences and critics, so how do the movies he directed compare to Army of Thieves, where he only has credits as writer and producer? Army of Thieves is the prequel to Army of the Dead, which Snyder directed, only Matthias Schweighöfer sat in the director's chair this time around to create a tonally different story about the origins of his Army of the Dead character, Ludwig Dieter.
Snyder's new deal with Netflix sees him developing a load of new movies and shows in multiple different universes, and while he's produced a few movies he didn't direct in the past, it's about to become a lot more common. In addition to the Army of the Dead sequel, Planet of the Dead and Rebel Moon, both of which Snyder is set to direct, he's also producing an action vehicle for his longtime stunt coordinator and second unit director Damon Caro, as well as two anime series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and Twilight of the Gods, which will feature multiple other directors.
Army of Thieves saw positive reviews with 71 percent of reviews being marked as "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a significant improvement from Snyder's average of 55 percent, although interestingly enough, the average score of all the individual reviews is almost the same, with Army of Thieves seeing a six out of 10 average and Snyder seeing a 5.9 average across his filmography. Even more interesting, when it comes to Rotten Tomatos' designated "Top Critics," Army of Thieves is still higher, with 50 percent versus Snyder's 47 percent, but the actual average review scores for Snyder's movies come to 5.67, whereas Army of Thieves' average review score was 5.5. Anomalies like this are one of the reasons the Rotten Tomatoes system is seen as highly flawed, since the simple Fresh versus Rotten percentage can often misconstrue the actual review score, so this is one of many examples where the better reviews didn't actually earn Snyder's filmography as a director a higher Tomatometer score than Army of Thieves.
Outside of critical reviews, Snyder-directed movies are a little more popular with audiences, with his average audience Tomatometer score coming in at 73 percent versus Army of Thieves Tomatometer score of 71 percent, and in this case, Snyder is also a step above with average audience reviews of 4.06 out of 10 versus Army of Thieves at 3.7 out of 10. Despite the slight differences for both audiences and critics, though, the scores are all in the same ballpark, and many reviews for Schweighöfer's Army of Thieves noted the directing style still fits well alongside Army of the Dead, even if it's tonally and stylistically unique to Snyder's usual approach.
The other big difference is Army of the Thieves is just way less reviewed in general, bringing in only 85 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes compared to Snyder's average of 272, with 280 on Army of the Dead, and a high point of 436 for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This makes sense because Army of Thieves was a much smaller production than most of Snyder's notoriously big films, although it certainly wasn't a hindrance for its performance on Netflix, where it hit the #1 spot worldwide, even bringing Army of the Dead back into the top ten trending section months after its initial debut. The new Snyderverse on Netflix is growing fast and getting bigger than just Zack Snyder, but based on reviews and viewership, it looks like fans of the director can expect all his projects, whether he's directing or not, to be consistent with the rest of his filmography.
