The Big Mysterio Problem No Way Home Is Going To Frustratingly Ignore

A surprising MCU retcon is making Mysterio's lies in Spider-Man: Far From Home a reality, although it seems likely Spider-Man: No Way Home will ignore the issue. The Multiverse has become a central part of the MCU's Phase 4, but it was set up in the oddest possible way - courtesy of Mysterio, the villain of Spider-Man: Far From Home, who lied about originating from another universe. Mysterio and his allies had rightly realized people were becoming far too comfortable with the weird and wacky, and consequently, they spun a multiversal lie that even deceived the Skrull Talos, who was impersonating Nick Fury.

Mysterio claimed to have originated from Earth-833, a deep cut from comic book lore - a dimension that doesn't have a Spider-Man, because its version of Peter Parker left his home to become a member of the multiversal Captain Britain Corps. According to Mysterio, Earth-833 had been attacked by elemental beings who had ultimately consumed the entire planet, and Mysterio had traveled through the dimensions to the mainstream MCU to help stop the creatures destroying another Earth. In reality, it was nothing more than a carefully crafted lie, one Peter Parker in particular embraced with excitement. But, curiously, one detail of Mysterio's deception has been confirmed to be true by Marvel.

According to MCU producer Nate Moore, the MCU is Earth-616 - the same designation Mysterio used. That reference is traditionally assigned to the main comic book timeline, where it was first used in Marvel UK's The Daredevils #7 back in 1983; although it's usually credited to writer Alan Moore and artist Alan Davis, Moore has suggested it was in fact dreamed up by his predecessor on the title, Dave Thorpe. Whatever the true origin may be, Mysterio's attempt to use the name "Earth-616" for the MCU timeline was met with disbelief with comic book readers when it was revealed in an extended clip from Spider-Man: Far From Home. In fact, it was seen as substantial proof Mysterio was lying, because until now viewers have considered the MCU to be Earth-199999.

Ironically, Marvel Comics execs seem to have hated the Earth-616 designation, because it suggested their stories didn't really matter because the Earth they were based on was nothing special - it wasn't even the first Earth, as in DC Comics, but instead was the 616th. They attempted a reset after 2015's Secret Wars event, with editorial insisting the recreation of the multiverse meant this was now the "Prime Universe." Unfortunately, writers either didn't the memo, or else disagreed with the editorial decision, because they continued using 616 regardless, and the "Prime Universe" idea has essentially been forgotten in the mists of time. There's a certain irony, then, in Marvel Studios now attempting to claim the 616 designation.

The oddity, of course, is that so many of Mysterio's lies appear to be becoming a reality in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Having been lied to about the multiverse, Peter Parker is being plunged into the real deal, although it remains to be seen whether or not Mysterio himself will appear, but either way it's hard to imagine an explanation for how he got this specific detail right. Having fought a fake Sandman, an Elemental created by Mysterio, he's now taking on the real Sandman of another Earth - as seen in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. And now even something rather too specific, the MCU's designation in the multiverse, is being confirmed by Marvel shortly after Moore will have been present at a summit crafting the rules of their multiverse. It's odd how so many of Mysterio's lies in Spider-Man: Far From Home are becoming the basis for the MCU's Phase 4 multiverse.
