Developer Housemarque shared a screenshot of an unknown object in Returnal, which has many fans convinced the studio is potentially teasing future DLC. Among the first true PlayStation 5 exclusives, Returnal hit store shelves earlier this year in April and offered up a roguelike experience like no other on the market.
The action-packed title marked quite the departure from the norm for Finnish studio Housemarque, a team that made a name for itself by developing classic arcade adventures such as Super Stardust, Dead Nation, and PS4 hit Resogun. Returnal features a few of the group's core gameplay tenets, though, especially in terms of the chaotic bullet hell mechanics. Players assume the role of deep space Astro-scout Selene, who veers off course to investigate a strange signal on the planet Atropos. Upon crash landing on the remote alien world, Selene finds herself locked in a time loop that restarts each time she succumbs to death. A new image from Housemarque seems to hint that the studio may have something else in store where Atropos is concerned.
Earlier today, November 26, Housemarque posted a screenshot on its official Twitter page of an unrecognizable artifact in Returnal. A caption that reads "Atropos...?" accompanies the image in question. Many a fan in the Twitter thread is pondering whether this serves as a tease for potential DLC. Some speculate an announcement could go live as early as next month during the 2021 Game Awards, which air on Thursday, December 9. If any of these guesses are accurate, Housemarque has yet to confirm as much. See the mystery Returnal image in the tweet linked below:
If the above is a DLC tease, the picture and corresponding caption could hint at one of two things. Either the hypothetical new content will take players away from Atropos, or Returnal's alien planet will undergo a world-changing transformation of some sort. Of course, the screenshot may also center on something in-game that users have yet to come across.
Returnal hit the PS5 this past spring to reviews that ranged from mixed to generally favorable. Player reception stretched across the same scale, with much of the disdain stemming from concerns about game-breaking glitches and poor save state options. Fortunately, many of these issues have since received a fix with post-launch updates. And a run suspension update that went live in October finally introduced a pause feature that may have come online little too late for some.
Returnal is available digitally and at retail for the PS5.
