FX's American Horror Story: Double Feature is a unique season of the long-running franchise in that it is split into two halves, telling two very different stories, one about vampires in Provincetown and the other about aliens starting the 1950s. Both halves, however, feature some very compelling characters, including ones that are sympathetic and ones that are utterly demonic.
What’s more, there are even a few that fall somewhere in the middle, having traits that make them likable even as they are capable of doing horrible things to their fellow main characters.
10 Austin Sommers
It's clear that Evan Peters has played some fascinating characters in the series, but Austin Sommers is one of his best. He is one of the creatives that takes the mysterious pill that boosts his creative energy while also ensuring that he has to feed on human blood.
Despite the fact that he becomes a murderer, he has a powerful charisma and an irresistible charm that keeps him from becoming nothing more than a straightforward villain. Like many characters in this franchise, he's not good but something about him remains a bit likable.
9 Harry Gardner
Like Peters, Finn Wittrock has established himself as one of the best actors in the franchise, appearing as a compelling character in a number of seasons. His Harry Gardner isn’t an evil person, at least not at first, but instead a struggling writer who wants to do the best for his family.
Even after he takes the pill and becomes a murderous vampire, he still manages to show that he’s likable by doing everything that he can to protect his wife from their monstrous daughter (who is far less likable than he is) and even try to save his daughter from herself.
8 Troy
Troy is one of the characters that appears in the second half of the season, and he is one of the unfortunate humans who gets impregnated by the aliens. He consistently shows himself to be a likable character.
For one thing, he clearly loves his boyfriend but, just as importantly, he actually expresses love for his half-alien/half-human child, and when the baby is killed by some of the other aliens, he is clearly devastated by the brutal death of his child.
7 Mickey
The legendary Macaulay Culkin has appeared in a wide variety of roles throughout his career, and he always manages to create compelling, sometimes tragic characters. Mickey is one of those, a young man who has to hustle in order to make ends meet in the bleak world of Provincetown.
While he does eventually succumb to the lure of the pill and the promise of becoming a successful writer, he is still a likable character who, among other things, offers a friendly and welcoming hand to Karen, even though she is the outcast of the town.
6 Belle Noir
Another actor with a knack for playing compelling characters in American Horror Story is Frances Conroy, and she brings out a lot of depth to Belle Noir, a writer who takes the pill after suffering years of abuse by her husband.
She may be a ruthless vampire by the time that the series begins, but there’s no denying that she also has a powerful charm that makes her almost impossible to actively dislike. What’s more, she shows that she is also a very skilled writer, able to constantly produce work that many millions of people want to read.
5 Doris Gardner
Doris Gardner is Harry’s unfortunate wife, and while she lacks his brilliance (when she takes the pill, she becomes one of the mindless vampires), she is still a very likable and sympathetic character. She supports her husband through all of his efforts as a writer, even though it takes a toll on her own career.
And, just as importantly, she also continues to try loving her daughter, Alma, despite the fact that the girl shows sociopathic tendencies and ends up becoming a murderous vampire herself.
4 Mamie Eisenhower
Sarah Paulson is one of the most beloved members of the American Horror Story cast, and she once again demonstrates why she deserves that with her character of Mamie Eisenhower.
Though she begins Death Valley by being one of those who support the aliens, as the show goes on she becomes more likable, especially once she begins opposing their plan to take over the entire world with their hybrid children. She ultimately stages an act of rebellion, and while it fails, she still shows that she has what it takes to be a hero.
3 Calico
Calico is one of the unfortunate women who are able to produce viable hybrids of human and alien, and as such she has been kept by them for several decades. While others might have become bitter and cynical, she instead goes out of her way to take the other new recruits under her wing.
She constantly provides support for them, trying to help them make sense of their changed circumstances by cautioning them against doing anything that might endanger their lives and lead to their deaths at the hands of the aliens.
2 Karen
Sarah Paulson is one of the actors who plays two different characters this season, including Karen, the outcast of Provincetown. She is one of those who hates what the vampires are doing, and though she falls under their power, she tries to warn everyone who comes to the town to get out while they still can.
After she is turned into a vampire, she makes the ultimate sacrifice by first killing Mickey and then slitting her wrists as she walks into the ocean, sparing herself the gruesome fate of becoming the thing she hates most.
1 Dwight Eisenhower
Dwight Eisenhower is one of the historical figures to put in an appearance, and it’s he who forges the first and most important treaty with the aliens. However, he is constantly torn by his moral desire to fight back against them and his realization that they could destroy everything he holds dear (including his wife).
He is the most likable person in both halves of the season because he clearly has a strong moral compass, even if he is ultimately forced to make the best decision out of several bad options, and this makes him simultaneously one of the best characters in Death Valley.
