My Hero Academia: Mr Compress' "Quirk" Power Explained

There are many weird and wonderful superpowers in the world of My Hero Academia, but what does the villainous Mr. Compress’ “Quirk” allow him to do? Created by Kōhei Horikoshi, My Hero Academia is an award-winning manga and anime series set in a world in which around 80% of the human population possesses superpowers known as “Quirks”. As a result of these Quirks, much of society is divided into two factions: heroes, who use their Quirks for the common good, and villains, who use their superhuman abilities for nefarious ends.

My Hero Academia characters usually develop their Quirk in early childhood before the age of four and undergo counseling to learn how to understand their powers and use them responsibly. Quirks are hereditary and children inherit either their mother or father’s quirk, or a combination of both their parents’ powers. There are many different types of Quirks in My Hero Academia, but they usually fall into three categories. Emitter Quirks allow users to control or alter things around them, Transformation Quirks, which allow people to temporarily transform their bodies or Mutant Quirks, which cause their users to have permanent abnormalities related to their superpower.

The villains in My Hero Academia have some very strange and impressive Quirks. Moonfish, for example, has a Quirk known as Blade-Tooth which gives him the ability to extend and manipulate his own teeth into a series of powerful blades while Himiko Toga’s Transform Quirk means she can assume the appearance and powers of another person by ingesting their blood. Mr. Compress, meanwhile, has a Quirk befittingly known as “Compress” but what kind of superhuman abilities does it grant him?

Like the name implies, Mr. Compress’ Quirk gives him the ability to compress anything within a certain distance into a small marble-like object by touching it. It’s an Emitter-type Quirk that means he can shrink down human targets – making them easy to conceal, kidnap and transport. The Compress Quirk also allows him to condense a specific part of a target’s body, effectively mutilating them in the process. Mr. Compress can shrink solid objects into marble form too, and it only takes snapping his fingers to turn his compressed targets back to their normal size.

Compress’ Quirk has proved useful on several occasions during the villain’s time in My Hero Academia. During the Vanguard Action Squad Invasion arc, for example, he shrank and captured the heroes Katsuki Bakugo and Fumikage Tokoyami in marble form. Later in My Hero Academia, Mr. Compress used his Quirk to shrink one of Kai Chisaki’s (AKA Overhaul) arms into a marble and mutilated him permanently as revenge for the Yakuza leader destroying his own left arm earlier on in the series.

An interesting aspect of Mr. Compress’ Quirk is that he’s also able to compress parts of his own body, which he did in chapter 294 of the My Hero Academia manga series to escape hero Best Jeanist but maimed himself in the process. Unfortunately for the villain, he’s currently imprisoned so it doesn’t look like he’ll be using Quirk ability again anytime soon.
