On Thursday, Borderlands 3 released a huge hotfix and patch that not only brought back the limited-time event Revenge of the Cartels, but also enabled crossplay between Xbox, Steam and Stadia players, made it so seasonal events can be activated at any time, and raised the level cap from 65 to 72. In addition to these key points, developer Gearbox also fixed bugs, addressed concerns with various mechanics in the game, adjusted some weapon anointments, and made the True Trial event last until July 1.
Borderlands 3 is the latest game in the original looter-shooter franchise, and it's gotten the most post-launch support of the mainline Borderlands trilogy. The first Revenge of the Cartels event first premiered in April 2020 as a seasonal event that took players to Villa Ultraviolet to defeat a head-hunter boss name Joey Ultraviolet. The True Trials event was a six-week event leading up to the return of the Revenge of the Cartels, which arrived alongside much, much more.
The most important and game-changing updates are Borderlands 3's level cap increase, the reintroduction of the Cartels event (now dubbed The Revengence of Revenge of the Cartels), and the enabling of crossplay. Though the level-cap increase will give players 70 skill points to use to spec into their Vault Hunter, all of the guns in their bank and inventory (as well as their shields, grenades, artifacts, and mods) will have to be farmed again. Additionally, many players have spent the last six weeks farming the bosses of the Proving Trials, an vanilla Borderlands 3 endgame slaughter map, just for those guns to now be under-leveled. Nevertheless, crossplay and the Revenge of the Cartels event are two things players have been greatly anticipating. Now, players will be able to farm the beloved guns of the event, like YellowCake, the O.P.Q System, and NoPewPew, together.
In addition, Gearbox also implemented other changes and fixes into the game. Now, all three of the seasonal events will be permanent in-game, for free, with the option of turning them off. Three guns from the Revenge of the Cartels event got buffed. The True Trials event was extended until July 1. There are a plethora of general updates and adjustments to improve gameplay. Lastly, a lot of the character-specific anointments have been changed. The goal was to make the character-specific anointments meta and more rewarding for players than before. It's a massive series of updates, and by the biggest since Borderlands 3: Guns, Love, & Tentacles
Borderlands 3 is almost two years old and it has received a lot of post-launch support and content. Even with the patches, hotfixes and DLC, some players have stopped playing the game. With this event now being permanent, along with the other seasonal events, and crossplay now enabled, a lot of those players may come back.
The Revenge of the Cartels is a fan-favorite event for a good reason. The map is a mix of neon colors with a classic 80s vibe and the guns found during this head-hunter are some of the best and most beloved in the game, which is saying a lot because there are over 1 billion guns in the game. Although a lot of current players are either going to love or hate the new anoint changes and level cap, it is great to finally have crossplay in addition to 4-player splitscreen in Borderlands 3.
