Snowpiercer: 5 Theories Why Melanie Is Still Alive (& 5 That Prove She's Dead)

Focusing on the conflict between the leaders of Snowpiercer as they wrestle control of the train away from Mr. Wilford, Snowpiercer season 2 heightened the tension established in season 1 and led to many moments which seemed to push characters to the extremes. While most of these moments happened on the train, the season's biggest emotional moment occurred off of the train.

Tasked with finding a suitable place for humanity to live outside of the train, Melanie makes a solo trip outside of the train to a research station only to find most of her resources depleted during an avalanche. Though the season ends with characters mourning her presumed death, many viewers have debated on if she is actually dead or if she's secretly still alive.

10 Still Alive: Her Death Isn't Shown

In the final moments of the season, Detective Layton and Alex trek to the research station where Melanie was last seen, only to find no sign of her. After searching the research station, Alex comes to the realization that Melanie has died.

One of the golden rules of television is that a character isn't dead until their body is shown. While it may have been an artistic choice not to show Melanie's dead body for fear of that image being too disturbing, there's a definite possibility that there wasn't a dead body to show.

9 Dead: Her Body Is Buried Under The Snow

The last image of Melanie in this season is of her rushing toward the train as it passes by, hoping for it to slow down. As the train passes by, Melanie is enveloped by the snowy landscape with her resources quickly depleting.

Given that she is miles away from her research station, it's entirely plausible that she died on the way back to the research station and her body is buried in the snow. This seems to be the assumption of both Layton and Alex, as neither of them is shown searching the area outside for her body.

8 Still Alive: Melanie Is Hiding Out With A Colony Of Survivors

Many fans still believe that there are small communities of humans still living out in the real world. With the research station perched near an area that could provide shelter from the punishing climate, there is a chance that Melanie may have found a small group of survivors.

There have been no hints so far that there is still life outside of the train, but this is not completely out of the realm of possibility. While much of the world has been destroyed, there has been evidence of some systems outside of the train still working.

7 Dead: The Odds Of Melanie Finding A Colony Like That Are Slim

Throughout Snowpiercer's journey around the world, there have been no clues that there is still human life outside the train. This means that if there are still small groups of humans existing, they are spread out and hard to find.

The odds of Melanie finding a colony of survivors with the very limited amount of time she had before her resources depleted are minimal. The odds are that Layton and Alex would have found at least a couple of clues leading to where Melanie went.

6 Still Alive: She's Arguably The Show's Main Character

Throughout the first two seasons, Melanie has had the most character development of anyone else on the show. Starting off attempting to quell Layton's uprising, Melanie finds herself becoming one of Layton's strongest allies.

With much of the first and second season devoted to her development, viewers have found it odd that Melanie's death was off-screen. This has led many to believe that her supposed death will instead be used as a moment that changes her character, similar to Jon Snow's death in Game of Thrones.

5 Dead: Alex Will Become The Show's Main Character

Introduced in the final moments of the first season, Melanie's daughter Alex begins the season hating Melanie for abandoning her to board the train. Initially starting off as an ally to Mr. Wilford, Alex begins to see how dangerous Mr. Wilford really is and eventually aids Layton in separating Snowpiercer from Big Alice.

With the closing moments of the second season finale focusing on Alex's devastation over Melanie's death, the show seems to set up a major storyline for the third season of a vengeful Alex seeking revenge on Mr. Wilford for abandoning Melanie.

4 Still Alive: She Was Picked Up By A Third Train

During the final moments of season 1, the passengers on Snowpiercer learn that there's actually another train traveling around the world: Big Alice, with none other than the vengeful creator of Snowpiercer Mr. Wilford on board. Even though Melanie seemingly knew of this train's existence, many others had no clue that it existed.

While a reveal of a third train could test the bounds of believability in some viewers, other viewers have theorized that one may exist. Though there hasn't been much evidence of a third train existing shown in the show, Snowpiercer is only 10 miles long.

3 Dead: The Lack Of Power In The Batteries

A battery-powered suit is needed to protect the characters from the punishing cold of the Freeze when outside the train. When Alex and Layton reach the research station, they find one of her batteries powering a hard drive filled with data, about to run out of power.

Though only one of Melanie's batteries is found, it's safe to assume that Melanie left the battery with the most amount of power to ensure that the hard drives stay powered up while using the other battery to walk out into the Freeze before passing away.

2 Still Alive: The Showrunner Has Confirmed Melanie Will Be In Season 3

In a post-season 2 finale interview with Deadline, executive producer Becky Clements hinted that viewers have not seen the last of Melanie. When asked about the fate of Melanie, Clements replied "Melanie will join us for season 3".

Viewers have interpreted Clements' vague answer to mean that she is still alive. Elsewhere in the interview, Clements teases that a new major character will be introduced in Season 3, one that could be connected to Melanie's survival.

1 Dead: Melanie's Return Could Be In A Flashback

Used sparingly, Snowpiercer has had multiple flashback sequences devoted to developing Melanie's past. In addition to showing her previous relationship with Mr. Wilford to explain why she abandoned him on Big Alice, there have also been flashbacks showing moments as she struggles with leaving Alex.

While Clements' comments could be seen as hinting at Melanie's survival, they could also be hinting at her appearance in various flashbacks. As Alex mourns her mother's death in Season 3, flashbacks with Melanie could be used to heighten the emotions of these moments.
