How Ragnarok Director & Stars Improvised Thor & Loki’s Get Help Scene

Tom Hiddleston reveals the process behind his improvisation with Chris Hemsworth during Thor: Ragnarok's "Get Help" scene. The third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise saw the God of Thunder forced to face off against his recently released sister Hela and escape the alien planet of Sakaar before she destroys Asgard. Hemsworth led the cast with Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeff Goldblum, Waititi, Karl Urban, and Idris Elba.

Unlike its immediate predecessor The Dark World or even its 2011 inaugural outing, Ragnarok scored rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for its performances, humor, action sequences, and Waititi's direction. The critical and commercial success landed Waititi the opportunity to return to co-write and direct a fourth Thor film, Love and Thunder, which recently wrapped production in Australia. Having the What We Do in the Shadows co-helmer in the director's chair certainly helped this comedic shift and Hiddleston is offering new details from behind the scenes of Ragnarok.

With the character's return in his own Disney+ series, Hiddleston spoke with IMDb to discuss Loki's most iconic moments in the MCU. Upon arriving at Ragnarok's "Get Help" sequence, the star revealed how the sequence was improvised and how he, Hemsworth, and Waititi put it all together. See what Hiddleston had to say below:

"It all came from Taika Waititi’s brilliant and inventive imagination. Taika came in in the morning and said, 'It would be really fun if you came into the room and pretended it was a game you used to play as kids.' As we worked it out, it was something completely improvised. It gives you such an insight into the way Taika works."

Nearly four years later, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the sequence was improvised by the stars, but it's interesting to hear a bit of insight into just how it came about. Waititi has previously stated that approximately 80 percent of the movie's dialogue was improvised by the cast and crew, with all of them expressing in various interviews the collaborative atmosphere this brought to Ragnarok's set. To hear this collaboration extended to outright creating one of the most iconic sequences in the Thor franchise is certainly a testament to the improv talent of both Waititi and stars Hemsworth and Hiddleston.

But recalling the Thor: Ragnarok moment is bittersweet, given Hiddleston has confirmed that Loki will not be returning for Love and Thunder. That being said, with the God of Mischief currently leading his own series at Disney+, Hiddleston's wise-cracking character won't be going away anytime soon. Now that production is complete on the next Thor installment, it's now time for Disney and Marvel to start rolling out the teasers leading up to its May 2022 release.
