A Quiet Place 2: Why Emmett Wears Shoes (But The Abbotts Don't)

The first Quiet Place movie made it a point to show that the Abbott family didn't wear shoes, which makes it all the more jarring to see Emmett (Cillian Murphy) don a pair of sturdy boots in A Quiet Place Part II. The Abbotts go barefoot in order to avoid attracting the attention of the alien monsters that hunt by sound. For someone who has managed to survive the attack thus far, it's surprising to see Emmett wearing shoes. But the shoes represent more than just a choice by Emmett.

The Quiet Place series chronicles life after an alien monster invasion. Since the creatures hunt by sound, all survivors need to remain as silent as possible. The first movie followed Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) as they attempted to keep their family alive on their farm. They take every precaution imaginable to stay safe, from lining the paths on their property with sand down to make them quieter, to almost exclusively speaking in sign language. But, despite being so careful, Lee is killed by one of the monsters near the end of A Quiet Place.

A Quiet Place Part II significantly changes up the setting of the narrative: With Lee's death, Evelyn and her children decide to leave their farm. The world they return to is vastly different than life on their property. Emmett wearing shoes is just one of the many examples of this. It's vital imagery for A Quiet Place Part II, as it proves the Abbotts might not be ready for the new world they've stumbled into.

A Quiet Place Part II is all about the Abbott family seeing how much the world changed while they were hiding out on the farm. Evelyn and her children Marcus and Regan managed to find some semblance of peace with Lee earlier in the invasion. But Emmett lost everyone nearly right away. The Abbotts maintained their humanity and empathy because they had each other. But as Regan and Emmett saw first hand, many survivors of the alien invasion turned to a nearly animalistic state in order to stay alive. The fact that, on top of all of this, Emmett wears shoes in a world that should be completely silent is just icing on the cake. Now that the Abbotts have left their farm, they can't go back to the way that they handled the invasion in their own bubble. The rules are different in the wider world, with each survivor figuring out their own way to continue living – and that also goes for Emmett.

That will inevitably lead into A Quiet Place Part III. The second movie in the series built toward an explosive conclusion to the story. The first installment saw the Abbotts discovering a way to take down the monsters, thanks to the feedback from Regan's hearing aids. The sequel focused on the family fighting the new obstacles while they attempt to share their knowledge with other survivors in the area. The events they went through in A Quiet Place Part II prepared them for the new ways of the world they would have to be accustomed to in order to wipe out the aliens. But now that they've seen how people outside of their farm have changed, they'll be ready.
