There's plenty to like about orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres. Not only is she excellent at her job but she tends to be a very considerate partner whenever she is in a relationship. Callie also happens to be the longest-running LGBTQ+ characters in TV history, having appeared in 10 seasons of Grey's Anatomy.
Despite managing to stay out of trouble most of the time, Callie has often found herself in situations that trigger her emotions. Luckily, she isn't one to keep her thoughts and feelings to herself. When something's bothering her, viewers get to know about it, sometimes with the most colorful of words.
10 "What Kind Of Person Wishes Someone Would Die?"
While Izzie is hospitalized, Callie has a conversation with Arizona during which confesses that there was a time she kept hoping Izzie would die. She regrets having such thoughts and is ashamed of herself for wishing death on a fellow doctor.
Callie's hatred for Izzie begins after she sleeps with her husband George. The two were constantly at odds with each other prior to this. However, this incident was the final nail in the coffin. Callie's grudge against lasted for quite some time until everyone in the hospital discovers that Izzie has cancer. This then leads Callie to express extreme remorse for her holding on to such hateful feelings and finally put their grudge to bed.
9 "I Used To Live In The Basement. Most Days I Wear Last Night's Eyeliner To Work, I Don't Give A Cr*p What Others Think Of Me!"
Callie isn't too pleased about Geroge trying to reconcile with her after hurting her feelings. Despite the fact that she has also slept with Mark, she is right for not wanting to see him again. He is the one who ruined their marriage by sleeping with Izzie.
During one of their post-break-up conversations, George tries to be smart by using a metaphor about a pig to describe how people get out of muddy situations. Callie misunderstands him and thinks he is insulting her. She goes on to remind him her awesome she is despite what people think of her. Nothing beats self-confidence. This was only one instance where the fans' respect for her grew.
8 "Jesus Would Be Ashamed Of You For Turning Your Back On Me."
Callie's father Carlos Torres has never been supportive of her sexuality but he still doesn't stop meddling in her affairs. After not speaking to each other for months, Carlos attempts to reconcile with her. However, this doesn't go as planned as he brings their priest to try and convince her to become straight.
When Callie realizes the real reason why Carlos flew thousands of miles, she is furious. This then leads to an emotional confrontation between the two, with Callie questioning her father why he struggles to love and accept her for who she is. She then tells him how "Jesus would be ashamed of [him] for judging and turning his back on her." Many fans have stated that this is one of the most powerful scenes in the show.
7 "I Build Arms Out Of Nothing... And Legs."
Callie asks Richard about the status of her job application in the season 6 premiere. She is eager to get started because she knows she is a good doctor. Sadly, there's bad news. Richard tells her that she won't be getting the job because Dr. Chang has put the retirement plans on hold.
Callie becomes angry because she feels unappreciated. She deserves better and viewers will definitely back her up. She has saved a young man trapped in concrete, she has made someone walk again despite Derek suggesting it was otherwise. She had performed medical miracles so her being denied an attending position was totally unfair.
6 "Do You Know How Happy Our Baby Would Be?"
Callie's love for children has been evident throughout the series. She had made it very clear that she would love to be a mother someday too. However, this proved to be a challenge for her at first because the person she loved the most was anti-kids.
Courtesy of a lengthy speech, Callie attempts to reassure Arizona that they would make great parents. However, Arizona stood her ground. While fans could sympathize with Callie's situation (especially as she felt like she had to choose between Arizona and her dream), they also respected Arizona's feelings too. It was just upsetting to see them reach a point where they are wondering if they are meant to be together.
5 "One More Personal Disaster Right Now Would Cut Me Off At The Knees."
Callie somehow becomes risk-averse later in the series. That's why she and Mark clash when a patient who had lengthened his legs to make himself taller comes to the hospital. The patient explains that he had surgery to add inches to his legs because his height was affecting his self-esteem. Unfortunately, this operation had led to a severe infection developing.
Callie seems to find herself relating to the patient's situation, stating that risks that only bring little pleasure and more pain should be avoided. She claims that all the big risks she took, including her relationships with George, Hahn, and her chief residency, all ended in disaster and affected her self-esteem greatly. She was essentially saying she no longer felt like the confident, self-assured woman the viewers first met. Callie deserved so much more at this point.
4 "If You Get On That Plane Without Me, We Are Done."
Compromises have proven to be quite a challenge for Callie and Arizona. After the hospital shooting, Arizona and Callie decide to give their romance another go. However, problems arise when Arizona wins a grant that requires her to go to Africa to help sick children. Callie decides to go with her even though she isn't so sure.
Callie is willing to compromise but an argument ensues during which Arizona concludes that Callie really doesn't want to go. Arizona isn't willing to choose a relationship over a career so she goes to board the plane alone. Callie pleads with her to not leave her behind but she does, leading to another breakup.
3 "I'll Never Forget The Look On His Wife's Face When She Came Back With That Sandwich In Her Hand."
Many people know that the life of a surgeon isn't very easy. However, sometimes certain cases can have a bigger effect on a person than they realize (as evidenced by Derek in season 5). Callie, too, has felt this loss, which is why she tries to help Derek through his pain.
She tells him how she once lost a patient who was undergoing a simple knee replacement. She was so confident that everything would go well that she told his wife to go get a sandwich for him, As soon as she left, the patient then became critical. When the patient's wife came back with the sandwich, he was already dead. One can only guess how horrible this must have felt.
2 "Go Back To Malawi!"
As soon as Arizona comes back from Africa, she tries to win back Callie. A shocked Callie steps out of her apartment and finds Arizona waiting in the hallway. Arizona tells Callie that she came back for her but she isn't impressed.
Callie isn't willing to reconcile. She tells Arizona to go back to Malawi. She has been subjected to enough heartbreaks. George cheated on her, Erica just left and then Arizona left too. After all that she has been through, Callie isn't willing to invite more drama into her life again.
1 "I Choose You To Be The One Whom I Spend My Life."
After breaking up and getting back together a couple of times, Callie and Arizona finally get married in a wedding presided over by Bailey. It's a beautiful moment for one of the show's best couples. Viewers have been treated to all kinds of push-and-pull and now it's finally happening.
The couple says their vows to each other before making it official. There have been many weddings in the show but none feels quite as wholesome as this. Everyone is happy for them.
