Of all the major characters on Gilmore Girls, Lorelai Gilmore is definitely the most relatable. She loves coffee and has trouble eating vegetables, she enjoys small-town life, and she loves pop culture. She's more comfortable grabbing a burger than going to a fancy party, and she would rather look at life with quirky optimism than be in a bad mood.
Whether talking about her favorite beverage, giving her daughter Rory advice, or making a joke about an awful day, Lorelai says a lot of things over the show's seven seasons that fans have thought themselves. Of course, she talks much faster than most people, which is part of her charm.
10 "My life stinks. Hey, let's look into each other's eyes and say 'I wish I were you' at exactly the same time — maybe we'll pull a Freaky Friday.'"
Rory and Lorelai had such a close bond because they're so similar, and it would have been hilarious if the two characters really had swapped places, as Lorelai hoped for. They would have each still kept their love of caffeine and ability to talk super fast.
This is a relatable quote as who hasn't had a hard day and wished that they could switch places with someone? It's easy to think that a friend or relative has a better life, or at least an easier one. This is even truer when spending a lot of time on social media and seeing perfect photos of avocado toast breakfasts and exquisitely decorated homes.
9 “Get back in your pajamas, go to bed, eat nothing but gallons of ice cream and tons of pizza..."
"...don’t take a shower or shave your legs or put on any makeup at all. Sit in the dark and watch a really sad movie and have a good cry and wallow, really wallow.”
Dean broke up with Rory in the first season for not saying that she loved him, and Lorelai swept in with some brilliant advice: it was time to wallow.
While Rory wanted to run errands at first, she caved in at the end of the episode and said she was ready to wallow. This was a moment when Lorelai said what anyone always thinks after a bad break-up or any tough moment in life: it's a good idea to get some junk food and watch some movies and feel those feelings.
8 "I already had the longest day of my life and oh look, it's only 10! How nice!"
In the season 1 episode "The Lorelais' First Day At Chilton," Lorelai didn't have the right clothes to wear to bring her daughter to school. She wore an infamous outfit that wasn't appropriate, and she went into Luke's Diner hoping for some caffeine and empathy, and delivered this utterly relatable quote.
While not every fan has worn a pink tie-dye t-shirt, jean shorts, and boots to a fancy meeting, everyone has had a bad day and realized that it was only 10 am. Sometimes the best thing to do is just take a deep breath and search for some coffee, just like Lorelai.
7 "I hate crossword puzzles. They make me feel stupid."
When Lorelai said this in the season 2 episode "Teach Me Tonight," Rory replied, "Then don't do 'em." Lorelai proved how stubborn she is when she responded, "Well, but if you don't do them, you're not only stupid, you're also a coward."
This is another perfect time when Lorelai said something that fans were thinking. While not everyone loathes crossword puzzles, they have at least one thing in their life that they find intimidating. Lorelai has a great tactic: instead of avoidance, face that fear and try to get over it.
6 "I just don't want you to get hurt, Rory! What if he doesn't leave her? Now you're all emotionally involved!"
When Rory and Dean slept together before season 4 ended, no one thought that this was a good idea — especially not Lorelai.
When Rory confessed what had happened, Lorelai said everything that fans were thinking at that moment: Rory was going to be the hurt one in this situation. While Rory seemed to assume that Dean would divorce Lindsay so he could be with her, that wasn't the most likely scenario. She was definitely in over her head.
5 "Hey, maybe instead of going to college, you should drop out and I could quit my job..."
"and we can form an all-girl band with Lane, you know, like Bananarama. We could call it Tangerinarama or Banana-fana-fo-fana-rama. . .or something."
In the third season of Gilmore Girls, Rory decided to apply to Yale, and she had a tough time as she worried about whether she would get into any Ivy League.
In the episode "Application Anxiety," Lorelai joked that instead of going to school, Rory should consider a different line: touring in a band. While of course, she wasn't serious, everyone can relate to that feeling of wanting to take a break from the pressures of daily life for a while. Even Rory, who had always gotten good grades, wasn't immune to concerns that her dream future was out of reach.
4 "Okay, see, I'm sorry. They did not even come up with a villain. No Freddy? No Jason? The villain is death? How lame is that? Who is seeing this movie?"
In season 6, Lorelai and Rory stopped speaking, and it was so gratifying when, later that season, they finally found their way back to each other.
In this scene, they were talking about a horror movie. Lorelai voiced her confusion: "But how can they make money like that? Where's the Halloween mask? Where's the costume? How come they keep making the same stupid movie over and over again?" This is super relatable, as many horror fans search for the best movies and are frequently let down by the multitude of unoriginal cliches.
3 "I hate when I'm an idiot and don't know it. I like being aware of my idiocy."
While everyone would love to be self-aware enough to know when they've misunderstood something or hurt someone's feelings by accident, unfortunately, life doesn't always work that way.
Lorelai summed it up perfectly: everyone makes mistakes and they might have no clue that they're messing up at all. Of course, since Lorelai has such a unique sense of humor, she joked that she wanted to know when she was being silly and ridiculous.
2 "I would like a cheeseburger, with a side of cheeseburger, and see if they can make me a cheeseburger smoothie."
Sometimes Gilmore Girls was about serious and sad subjects, and other times, the characters talked about light-hearted topics like junk food.
In the season 7 episode "French Twist," Lorelai said this quote, and fans could definitely relate to it. While Lorelai and Rory's junk food consumption is pretty unique, most people would admit that they would love to eat cheeseburgers on a regular basis. This is especially true when it's been a long day or week and it's time to sit on the couch and relax.
1 "Nothing says 'coffee' like six in the morning."
Some people love the early morning and actually set their alarms for 6 am or even sooner than that. They want to sit in a quiet home and meditate or read. No matter what their morning routine, they always enjoy a cup or two of coffee.
Gilmore Girls fans can relate to this Lorelai Gilmore quote, as it's true that whether someone loves the early hours of the day or not, most need some caffeine to feel human. Lorelai summed up that feeling so perfectly.
