Star Trek: Discovery season 3 will soon debut on both CBS All Access and Netflix, and here's when it'll first become available to stream. In 2017, Star Trek: Discovery came along after a lengthy 12-year absence from TV for the franchise. Some of that gap is likely due to the not so great legacy of Star Trek: Enterprise, as well as wanting to give the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies some breathing room. Still, TV is where Star Trek began, and TV is its most natural home.
Sure, the fan response to Star Trek: Discovery so far has by no means been universally positive, but at the same time, the passionate, devoted fanbase of the Star Trek franchise is both diverse and extremely hard to please. Fans have understandably high expectations for programs bearing the Star Trek name, and they expect those expectations to be met, or at least aspired to. Thankfully, Discovery has proved popular enough to earn what will soon be three seasons, with a fourth in development.
Star Trek: Discovery debuts season 3 at midnight PT/1AM MT/2AM CT/3AM ET on Thursday, October 15, 2020, exclusively on CBS All Access in the U.S. In most of the rest of the world, Star Trek: Discovery premieres on Netflix at midnight PT/1AM MT/2AM CT/3AM ET on Friday, October 16, 2020.
Star Trek: Discovery season 3 will see a bit of an adjustment take place behind the scenes, as formerly solo showrunner Alex Kurtzman will be joined by new co-showrunner Michelle Paradise. Paradise joined Discovery as a writer for season 2, and Kurtzman says she helped him greatly with the creative process while his attention was split between multiple Star Trek projects. He felt she had already sort of been functioning as co-showrunner in an unofficial capacity, so thought it was only right that she get the gig formally for season 3.
Star Trek: Discovery season 3 will truly boldly go where no Trek series has before, as the ship and its crew ended season 2 by traveling far into the future, to a time period outside of existing franchise continuity. This should remove Discovery from any baggage connected to past stories, and allow it to walk a new path. Whether that new path will prove a successful one remains to be seen, but it's safe to say most fans are rooting for Star Trek: Discovery to produce a season 3 even better than the first two, and add a new worthy chapter to Star Trek franchise lore.
