Jamie Foxx is set to star and executive produce Day Shift, a new vampire comedy for Netflix. The film will mark the directorial debut of JJ Perry, a longtime stunt coordinator known for his work on the John Wick and Fast & Furious franchises. It will follow an original story written by Tyler Tice, whose screenplay generated considerable Hollywood buzz after it won the 2017 Slamdance Writing Competition Grand Prize.
Variety reported that Day Shift will follow Foxx as a blue-collar pool attendant in the San Fernando Valley who works hard every day to provide for his eight-year-old daughter. However, his pool job is merely a cover for his real moneymaking gig as a vampire hunter. The movie is the latest in a string of Netflix projects that Foxx is attached to, including the recently announced sci-fi feature They Cloned Tyrone co-starring John Boyega and the father-daughter series Dad Stop Embarrassing Me. Foxx can also be seen in Netflix's superhero film Project Power, which dropped on the streamer August 14.
In addition to Perry, Day Shift boasts plenty of high-caliber stuntmen behind the camera, including producer Chad Stahelski, who was a prolific stuntman for years before going on to direct the John Wick movies. Though details are scant, the film's premise of a man hunting and killing vampires certainly seems like it could lean far into the action genre despite primarily being marketed as a comedy. Combine all of that with the array of stunt performers working on the project and the film looks poised to be not just a vampire comedy but a stunt-heavy action movie.
