A new Half-Life: Alyx mod lets players explore BioShock's iconic city of Rapture in VR. Half-Life: Alyx is a VR game set between the events of the historic first-person shooter Half-Life and its sequel, Half-Life 2. It was released in March 23rd, 2020, to universal acclaim. Many have called it a veritable triumph of VR as a medium.
The game offered a full-length survival campaign, almost unheard of in the VR medium, and the extreme level of polish also contributed to the game's overwhelming success. Another major selling point for the game was its extensive mod support. Not many other VR games offer such creativity for players, though the recently added VR mode in the PlayStation exclusive creation platform Dreams has been lauded for the high value it brings to the PSVR. The modding community has embraced Half-Life: Alyx in a big way.
This is especially true of Steam Workshop user wim.buytaert.1988, who has made a mod called Return to Rapture. True to its name, the mod sends Alyx under the seas to the fabled lost city of Rapture, the setting of the classic 2007 FPS Bioshock and its 2010 sequel. wim.buytaert.1988 has included a full story campaign to accompany players as they explore the ruined dystopia, which pits Alyx against the menacing Combine in a race to discover the secret behind the mystical Plasmids that tore the city apart. In addition to faithfully replicating atmosphere and environments from the original game, the modder has added authentic sound effects from the games, as well as audio diaries and interactive machines. The sepulchral aquatic city of Rapture was key to BioShock's success, and in spite of its considerable terror factor, it's still a memorable and enticing location. There are surely many fans who've thought about getting a chance to explore Rapture for themselves, and wim.buytaert.1988 has done an excellent job of bringing the setting to life. Modders have made something of a tradition of recreating classic games in Half-Life: Alyx; the Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye 007, for instance, was recently produced in the VR game. But the attention to detail and atmosphere that's gone into this recreation of the city of Rapture really sets it apart from its contemporaries.
The modding community consistently raises the bar for remarkable and even preposterous fan-made creations. If it can be dreamed up, there's probably a mod for it. Some of these mods transcend the games they're set in and elevate one's player experience in an incredible way. Return to Rapture may yet be one of these, but even if it doesn't quite rise to those levels, it should still be a wonderful chance for BioShock fans to revisit their past in Half-Life Alyx.
