Posters for The Mandalorian season 2 contain several Star Wars Easter eggs, giving clues as to what fans can expect from the new episodes. Almost a full year on from the release of season 1, the marketing campaign for The Mandalorian season 2 is ramping up. New episodes are set to premiere starting on October 30, 2020, and the series will follow the same weekly release format it used in previously1. From the looks of these new trailers and posters, it seems that the show’s second season will give viewers even more insight into the world of Star Wars during the post-imperial era.
While past Star Wars films have focused on the Galaxy’s leaders and the biggest events on each planet, The Mandalorian is more subtle. The show illustrates how average people in the Star Wars universe live, from humble farming communities to low-level bounty hunters. The Mandalorian also incorporated Star Wars elements from outside the main trilogies of films like the Darksaber from The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. This was especially rewarding for eagle-eyed fans always on the lookout for their favorite bits of lore, and it looks like season 2 will continue that.
Among the promotional materials was a set of four posters featuring Din Djarin, Cara Dune, Greef Karga, and of course, Baby Yoda, with each character standing dramatically in front of a graffiti-covered wall. It’s this graffiti that’s the most interesting, since each wall contains multiple Easter eggs and references to past Star Wars stories. Here is every Easter egg in the new The Mandalorian posters, and what they tell reveal about season 2.
First off, each of the posters features at least one face of a Gamorrean, a pig-like alien creature seen in the original Star Wars trilogy. Thanks to trailers for The Mandalorian season 2, it’s pretty easy to understand what these graffiti faces are referencing. In the trailers, Din visits a fighting ring where two Gamorreans are facing off. These gruesome characters are most well-known for guarding Jabba’s palace on Tatooine in Return of the Jedi, and viewers even see one unfortunate Gamorrean get eaten by a hungry Rancor. The posters also include one other graffiti face that could possibly be a Tusken Raider; a group of nomadic aliens that live on desert planets like Tatooine. Given this evidence, and the fact that previous posters show the characters on a desert planet, then The Mandalorian season 2 will see Din and The Child paying another visit to Tatooine.
The graffiti posters also show the face of an Aqualish with a big red strike through their face. An Aqualish is the type of alien that Obi-Wan cuts the arm off of in the Mos Eisley Cantina in the original Star Wars. Outside of the original trilogy, the Aqualish have been featured in plenty of episodes of The Clone Wars, where several of them sided with Dooku’s Separatists. The meaning of this Aqualish face in the poster is unclear, but the reigning theory right now is that Din and The Child will be visiting a planet where the Aqualish are not welcome. This could be Tatooine again, since the Cantina itself was featured in The Mandalorian season 1, or it could be a whole different planet. Either way, this idea is exciting because The Mandalorian could have a chance to finally address how interspecies racism manifests in the Star Wars galaxy, something that has only been briefly touched on in the movies.
While the small TIE Fighter symbol below Baby Yoda’s floating crib is instantly recognizable, it is also perhaps the least informative Easter egg on these posters. Previous trailers for The Mandalorian season 2 have already shown that there are going to be TIE Fighters featured in the new episode, as well as more Stormtroopers left over from the fallen Empire. What this revealss is that the Empire’s scattered forces will play a more significant role in season 2. Hopefully, this won’t result in Baby Yoda getting bopped on the head again.
Another Easter egg in the posters is a large Rebel Alliance Starbird right behind Cara Dune. The Rebel Alliance Starbird is one of the most recognizable symbols in Star Wars and represents the rebellion from the original trilogy. Viewers are already aware of Cara’s past with the Rebels from The Mandalorian season 1; she even has the Starbird tattooed under her left eye. The large Starbird behind Cara certainly raises a lot of questions for season 2. Will Cara Dune re-align herself with the Rebels after spending so much time apart from them? Will the rest of the characters get to meet the rebels? The trailers for The Mandalorian season 2 have indicated that Din will be meeting with the Jedi, which could very well mean meeting with the Rebels as well. Whether this is the case or not, viewers are clearly going to be learning a lot more about Cara’s backstory.
The Rebel Alliance Starbird isn’t the only Star Wars crest being referenced in these posters. To the left of Baby Yoda, there appears to be a painted symbol of a feather or a stalk of wheat. This symbol closely resembles the Fett family crest, worn by Boba Fett as part of his iconic armor. If this is what this symbol is referencing, then it's a big tease for Boba Fett's return, which is set to come at some point in The Mandalorian season 2.
However, it is possible that this symbol is not a direct reference to Boba Fett. The Fett family crest has at this point become a symbol for all Mandalorians, not just the Fetts. And since the image is behind Baby Yoda, it could be a reference to how The Child was welcomed into the Mandalorians as a part of Din Djarin’s clan at the end of season 1. Just how and when Boba Fett fits into this story remains to be seen.
Obviously, the images in these graffiti posters are the most interesting, but there’s also plenty of writing in them as well. All of these hidden messages are written in Aurebesh, the fictional Star Wars alphabet used for writing Galactic Basic, the most common language in the Galaxy. Some of the messages, like the one to the left of Greef Karga, are quite difficult to make out. Others, like the one behind Cara Dune, are more clear. It looks like she could have the words “You Win” behind her, or maybe “You Wish,” a phrase that reflects her more sarcastic attitude.
The clearest Aurebesh message is the one behind Din, which reads “Life.” It looks like Baby Yoda has this same word behind him, though his pod is covering up most of it. The word “life” could be a reference to how Din has promised to protect the life of The Child going into The Mandalorian season 2. The fact that he and The Child have the same word behind them shows how their lives are even more connected now that they are a “clan of two.” Maybe not the most mind-blowing Easter egg, but it sure is adorable.
All these little Easter eggs in the posters are fun to point out, but what do they all mean for The Mandalorian season 2? Well, first of all, there are plenty of references to things from Tatooine, which means we’ll likely see an episode or two take place on the desert wasteland. There are also references to the Rebels and Boba Fett, which fits with seeing both of them in The Mandalorian season 2 as well.
Finally, there’s the art style of the graffiti itself. A few Star Wars fans have pointed out that the graffiti resembles the work of Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian and artist featured in the Star Wars Rebels TV series. Since she is a Mandalorian, it's strongly rumored that Sabine will join The Mandalorian season 2. This graffiti in the posters may be teasing Sabine’s appearance in the show. Overall, these posters and their Easter eggs confirm what audience members already knew: The Mandalorian season 2 is going to have more aliens, more Rebels, and a more complex interpretation of the Star Wars galaxy than ever before.
