A new image offers fans their best look at Rey's (Daisy Ridley) yellow lightsaber from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It's been several months since the J.J. Abrams film hit theaters, and yet, fans are still learning more about it in other venues. One of the latest reveals has something to do with Rey's own lightsaber, which only debuted at the end of the aforementioned film.
Introduced in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the scavenger-turned-Jedi went through a lot in terms of helping the Resistance's fight against the First Order, all while discovering new things about herself. Throughout Rey's journey, she mainly used her staff or other people's lightsabers, but not her own. So fans were happy when she finally whipped up the Jedi weapon she made for herself. However, since the reveal wasn't until the final moments of The Rise of Skywalker, the public barely had any time to examine how it actually looks like.
Thankfully, a new image of the said lightsaber is now available, offering fans a chance to have a much closer look at Rey's weapon. Shared by Star Wars Net, the illustration is part of the upcoming book titled Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection, which is slated to release next month. Not much is know about how Rey built the lightsaber or where she got the kyber crystal for it, but as the description from Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection confirms, she used her staff for its handle. While The Rise of Skywalker didn't show her wielding the weapon, she at least ignited it, revealing its rotator mechanism with the dial flickering blue and green until it settled to its yellow setting. Abrams' film was supposed to include an entire subplot of Rey making her lightsaber, which would've been cool to see, but Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak revealed that it was ultimately cut. He didn't get into the specifics why, but this is a bummer for a lot of fans.
Admittedly, there's a lot of missed opportunities in the Star Wars sequel trilogy which is not lost on both the fans and even people involved in the franchise as well. Since there's no overall plan, several subplots were set-up only to be never revisited again. When Rey was introduced, there was so much excitement over her character given her mysterious background and interesting origin as a scavenger. Unfortunately, at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, her character was underutilized. The chance to establish an entirely new character that could spearhead future stories was wasted when they decided to over-explain her origins and high power levels by revealing that she's a Palpatine descendant.
