Sharp-eyed Nintendo fans have begun spreading rumors that there will be a Nintendo Direct presentation this month. It's been almost a full year since the last major Direct showcase, and despite the large amount of significant third-party titles the studio has in the works, it's been mostly quiet about what it's working on, spending 2020 focused on Indie World showcases and minor Partner Directs.
Like everyone, Nintendo has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The iconic development company was slated to put in an appearance at E3 this year, but the outbreak forced the event's cancellation and Nintendo has been dragging its feet on sharing news online, unlike its competitors. The pandemic has led to the delay of the newest DLC fighter to enter Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and has likely pushed back several other Nintendo projects as well. While other developers are fighting to adapt to the new lifestyle mandated by COVID-19, it looks like Nintendo's been stuck playing catch-up.
But frustrated Nintendo fans might not have much longer to wait. According to Game Rant, the official Nintendo Direct archive was modified today, possibly suggesting that Nintendo is gearing up to add a new show to the list sometime soon. It's not much to go on, but considering that this isn't the first time rumors have spread about a Direct coming in September, it's worth paying attention to. Industry insider reports have stated that there will be a show in the first half of the month, which would certainly be a swift surprise for Nintendo fans. As one might expect, there has been no official word from Nintendo about an upcoming Direct yet.
Fans have a lot of reasons to hope that these rumors are true. Nintendo is sitting on a lot of projects that people want to know more about. Most prominent among these is the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel, which was revealed at E3 last year and has since fallen into silence. Now that Min Min has joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, fans are also eager to find out who the next DLC fighter is. A Direct could also see the confirmation of the rumored Skyward Sword port, hinted at by a brief listing on Amazon UK. Finally, with the 35th anniversary of the legendary Mario franchise on the horizon, many are expecting Nintendo to release a collection of 3D Mario games. Even if those rumors don't pan out, it would be surprising to hear that Nintendo has no plans to commemorate the beloved plumber this year.
It's certainly not been a great year for Nintendo. While its mini directs and indie showcases have brought some pleasant surprises, like Spiritfarer, the studio itself has put out very little. Still, it can't be said that Nintendo hasn't earned the reputation it has today. If the developer can pull itself out of this slump, then players should have a lot to look forward to whenever the next Nintendo Direct comes along.
