When Vinay Chadha and Nadia Jagessar met on Indian Matchmaking, it had all the makings of a Bollywood romance. A dreamy restaurant setting, glasses of wine, gourmet food, and conversations aplenty kept flowing between the two. But things turned sour when Vinay stood Nadia up not once, but twice. Netflix fans labeled him the villain and #TeamNadia became a thing. However, Vinay insists that it's Nadia who ghosted him. Who's telling the truth?
Indian Matchmaking follows the journey of various Indian and Indo-American singles entering the world of arranged marriages with the help of charismatic matchmaker Sima Taparia. The show accumulated attention for its romanticized view of arranged marriages and, of course, its healthy supply drama. In the first episode, viewers are introduced to Nadia, a fun-loving event planner from New Jersey. The Guyanese American with Indian origins is on the lookout for a compatible partner and decides to ask for Sima’s help in finding an Indian man who ticks all the boxes on her list. After an unsuccessful date with no chemistry, Nadia goes to dinner with Vinay Chadha, the head of finance for a chain of boutique gyms. The connection is instant. The pair go on a few more dates until one fateful movie night when Nadia is stood up by Vinay. He gets back to her the next day claiming he was unwell and apologizes with flowers, chocolates, and cookies. Despite her hesitation, Nadia forgives him and the couple moves forward. A few days later, however, Vinay fails to show up to a dinner with Nadia's friends, leaving her heartbroken and embarrassed.
While the show seems to depict an unfiltered view of the matchmaking process, many are now coming out of the woodwork claiming that the show is edited in a way to make particular people look either good or bad. Lashing out against his edit, Vinay jumped in on the conversation and presented his side of the story regarding the "ghosting" incident. He took to Instagram to defend himself and posted a lengthy message saying that it was Nadia who stood him up. You can see his full post for yourself below:
Trying his best to rub the label of a villain off his name, Vinay wrote how he was supposed to meet Nadia and her friends after a wedding she was attending. He mentioned how, in spite of having a family issue going on, he still intended to come. Though he texted Nadia that he was on his way, Vinay did try to own his mistakes. He wrote, “I was def unclear and vague and vague and not responsive and I own that,” he professed. He then said that he could see his behavior bothered Nadia and tried to make it up to her. However, he denied that he ever disappeared on her, writing, “Fast forward to the movie night, I NEVER DITCHED HER THERE. The morning of the movie on July 18 I texted her saying I was sick and didn’t want to flake last minute so I can’t come...She didn’t react well when later in the day I got an IV and wanted to meet up." Vinay went on to explain that Nadia didn't even ask how he was feeling, and ended his comments by saying, “The meeting dinner with her friends never happened. I was the one left heartbroken and ghosted."
Viewers and #TeamNadia are obviously not ready to believe Vinay, especially without receipts. While screenshots would show how exactly the miscommunication in the budding relationship between the Indian Matchmaking couple panned out, it would also answer a burning question that most viewers have on their minds – is the show scripted? With the screenshots of the conversations between Nadia and Vinay, a few fans to gain satisfaction that they were probably a real couple after all.
All episodes of Indian Matchmaking are now streaming on Netflix.
