A Skyrim fan has made a release date timeline showing every version of the game, even the Alexa version. Considered to be one of the greatest games of all time, Skyrim has been released and re-released multiple times on several platforms since it first launched way back in 2011 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Its most recent iteration is this year’s Skyrim – Anniversary Edition, which was released just last month for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Apart from Skyrim’s different iterations and releases, other games have featured the iconic region in one way or another. The Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda’s MMORPG based on the franchise, featured a story arc called The Dark Heart of Skyrim, while an expansion called the Heroes of Skyrim was released for the The Elder Scrolls: Legends digital collectible card game. There’s even a virtual pinball adaptation of the game made by Zen Studios that was made part of Zen Pinball 2, Pinball FX 2, and Pinball FX 3.
Reddit user tennissh0es shared the timeline they created on the gaming subreddit. The chart shows the first release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim back in 2011, which was followed by the Legendary Edition two years later in 2013. The game then took a break for a few years before a flurry of releases from 2016 to 2018, which saw the launch of the remastered Special Edition, the game’s Switch release, and Skyrim VR. Those years also played host to the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim version of Monopoly, as well as the parody version called Skyrim: Very Special Edition for Amazon’s Echo devices. Lastly, the aforementioned Anniversary Edition was released just this year.
See the timeline on Reddit here.
Each of Skyrim’s major re-releases added a bit more to the game than the one that came before it. The Legendary Edition included the most recent patch at the time as well as the game’s three expansions, the Special Edition featured an upgraded game engine and mod support for consoles, and the Anniversary Edition comes with all the content from the Special Edition along with over 500 fan-made Skyrim mods and content as well as fishing and player-owned aquariums.
It’s pretty impressive that a single-player game has stayed relevant enough to keep being re-released on newer platforms 10 years later. The only other game that has a chance of achieving the same milestone is Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5, which is releasing again on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S next year eight years after its initial launch. While open-world fans wait for that, though, they can still reflect on the success and legacy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
