Lord of the Rings: The One Ring TTRPG Available For Preorder

Pre-orders are live for the second edition of The One Ring, which is a tabletop RPG adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, including The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The first edition of the game launched in 2011 and concluded its run in 2019, with the brand new second edition being funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign.

There have been several tabletop RPGs based on The Lord of the Rings over the years. Dungeons & Dragons was inspired by Tolkien's work, so it wasn't much of a stretch to make a whole tabletop game set in Middle-earth. There was even a The Lord of the Rings RPG that used the rules for the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons. This RPG was called Adventures in Middle-earth, and allowed those who enjoy the 5E ruleset to play in the iconic setting of the beloved novels and films.

The second edition of The One Ring RPG is being published by Free League Publishing, after being the most successful tabletop RPG Kickstarter of all time. The pre-orders for the initial round of books and sets are live, with an expected release date of Q1 2022. Those who order the books before then (or who supported the Kickstarter) will receive PDF copies of the books right now. The One Ring RPG books can be pre-ordered on the Free League Publishing website. A trailer for the game can be seen on the official Free League Publishing YouTube channel.

The current The One Ring RPG books and sets on offer include The One Ring Core Rules, which contains all of the rules for the game, as well as setting info for the era set twenty years after the events of The Hobbit. Players can also obtain The One Ring Starter Set, which contains a set of streamlined rules, a series of adventures, and some pre-generated characters to get players started with some adventures in The Shire. Also available is The One Ring Loremaster's Screen & Rivendell Compendium, which is the DM screen for the game, and a guide to Rivendell. All of these items can be purchased together as part of The One Ring Bundle. There are also physical items on offer, including a set of black dice, a set of white dice, a cloth map of The Shire, and a cloth map of Eriador.

The new edition of The One Ring contains numerous rules revisions, based on nearly a decade's worth of player feedback. The events of The Lord of the Rings are still several decades away in the lore of this game, but there are still plenty of adventures to be had in Middle-earth. The Fellowship only explored a small part of Middle-earth on their journey to destroy the One Ring, and there are entire ruined kingdoms filled with foes waiting to be fought, treasures waiting to be found, and familiar faces from the works of Tolkien to meet. There is a rich legacy of interactive chances for fans to explore the world of Middle-earth, including the long-running Lord of the Rings Online, but fans of tabletop games will likely relish the opportunity to explore this fantastical world together when the full launch comes next year.
