Instagram just added 'Playback' as a new limited-time feature, allowing users to view/create a yearly recap of all their Instagram Stories. Yearly recaps have quickly become one of the hottest trends in mobile apps. Spotify Wrapped showcases people's streaming habits over the year, TikTok launched its own annual recap in 2020, and even apps like Duolingo have since jumped on the bandwagon.
Despite all of this, one app that's always lacked any such functionality is Instagram. There are plenty of third-party applications that connect to Instagram accounts and show people's top posts of the year. However, this has never been something officially offered by the photo-sharing service.
After lots of patiently waiting, Instagram decided 2021 was the year to change this... kind of. As of December 9, Instagram users can now access their 2021 Playback — a pre-made recap of their top Instagram Stories posts of the past year. Interestingly enough, Playback only highlights things people shared on Instagram Stories. Any photos/videos uploaded to the main Instagram feed aren't included. It's possible Instagram expands on this with future Playbacks, but at least for 2021, only Stories apply.

The good news? Making an Instagram Playback is extremely easy. Once it's available for someone's account, a pop-up for Playback appears on the Instagram home page. Users can dismiss the feature by tapping 'Not now,' or tap 'View Playback' to see what Instagram made for them. By default, Playback shows 10 pre-selected Stories chosen by Instagram. Users can keep the Playback as is, or add/remove any other Stories from 2021 to customize the Playback to their exact liking. Once it's perfect, the Playback can be shared on Instagram Stories just like any other post.
To help distinguish Playback posts from other ones, they're accompanied with a '2021' sticker. If someone's looking at an Instagram Stories post from another user and sees that sticker, they can tap it to start making their own Instagram Playback if they haven't already.
There's just one more thing to remember, and that's Instagram Playback's availability. As mentioned above, the feature began rolling out to Instagram users on Thursday, December 9. Instagram says it wants Playback to help people "celebrate and reflect on 2021 ahead of the New Year." As such, Playback is only available for a few weeks from its launch. Instagram hasn't outlined a specific end date for Playback, though it's likely to disappear on or around January 1. In other words, you better make yours soon before it's gone for good.
