Fans of MTV's The Real World will be excited to hear that the cast of Netflix's new reality TV show Roaring Twenties has been revealed, featuring a diverse group of young people from all over the country. The show is set in Austin, Texas, and will have all the stars live together in the same house — much like the original The Real World. But based on what Netflix has released about the show so far, it looks like it will be more intimate than its MTV counterpart, focusing on the stars' growth, rather than relationship drama, hookups, and the resulting fights.
Roaring Twenties is just one in a slew of new Netflix reality TV shows. From the new season of the hit show Tiger King and dating shows like Sexy Beasts in the U.S., to South Korea's popular Busted! and new reality show, New World, Netflix has been throwing money at reality TV programming in the last few years, likely because they are known to be low budget but lucrative.
The cast of Roaring Twenties includes eight singles ranging in age from 23 to 28, from states like California, Florida, and, of course, Texas, E! reported Tuesday. The bios for each character are intriguing. Abbey from Houston "married her high-school sweetheart, and at 25, she's just coming out of a divorce...and exploring her bisexuality." Then there's Raquel from Eatonville, Florida, who reportedly never goes barefoot because she has a phobia of her feet touching the ground and 28-year-old Keauno who has never been kissed. Perhaps most interesting is 26-year-old Natalie from Miami, who has never had a boyfriend. "She grew up in a strict Latin household with cameras inside the house monitoring her every move, and her dad wouldn't even allow her to hug boys unless she covered her chest!" E! wrote.
There's a whole lot of personality in the cast, which is sure to make for good television. Reality TV fans and Netflix also know from experience that a diverse cast leads to better content, as clashes of cultures, ideas, and expectations often cause the most interesting and growth-inducing conflicts.
Given that Roaring Twenties is also billed as Roaring Twenties: Austin, it seems likely that Netflix plans on doing many seasons of this show but have it set in different cities, which is, again, like The Real World. Part of the reason the show is called Roaring Twenties is that we are once again in the '20s, ostensibly, and thus we are seeing 20-somethings deal with this new world. So it seems Netflix has about eight years to cash in on this show before it must resort to featuring old cast members now in their 30s...in the '30s.
Roaring Twenties premieres on Netflix on Dec. 10.
