Paramount+ has picked up The Real World spin-off, The Real World Homecoming, for a two-season renewal following the success of the first season, which saw the long-awaited reunion of The Real World: New York cast. The streaming platform, which not only hosts CBS, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, streams all content from MTV Entertainment including The Real World franchise. Paramount+ has a strong lineup of unscripted original series, including The Challenge: All Stars, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars and RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars: Untucked. Viewers can also find a library of popular reality series including Love & Hip Hop, Love Island, The Amazing Race, Survivor, Big Brother and Jersey Shore.
The Real World first premiered on MTV in 1992 and told the true story of seven strangers picked to live together in a house temporarily while being filmed continuously. The Real World season 1 kicked off in New York City. On the heels of its cult-like popularity, it was quickly renewed for another season with The Real World: Los Angeles, then on to San Francisco and London. At 33 seasons, it's MTV's longest running program and one of the longest running reality series in history. The Real World was partly inspired by The American Family, a 1973 PBS documentary series, which many consider the first reality show. Creators Mary Ellis-Bunim and Jonathan Murray also took inspiration from '90s series from that time, Melrose Place and Beverly Hills, 90210.
Now The Real World Homecoming is bringing back former cast members to reunite and share their most personal selves under one roof. Just six months after the premiere of the spin-off, Paramount+ renewed The Real World Homecoming for a second and third season, with reports that the Los Angeles cast will be the next to reunite. Paramount+ said in a statement (as reported by TV Insider), "After spending decades apart, the roommates will reconnect to find out how the series transformed their lives since the cameras stopped rolling, and they'll discover, once again, what happens when people stop being polite...and start getting real." The L.A. cast will include Dominic Griffin, Tami Roman, Jon Brennan, Beth Stolarczyk, Irene Berrera, David Edwards, Glen Naessens (who replaced David after he was voted off) and Beth Anthony (who replaced Irene after she left in episode 12).
The first season of The Real World Homecoming reunited the cast members of The Real World: New York in the same Soho loft they first filmed in. The first season ran for six episodes and featured some very of-the-moment drama, including cast member Eric Nies being forced to appear virtually after testing positive for COVID-19. For Los Angeles, the cast will reunite in the same 4,250 square foot Venice beach pad which, in 1993 dollars, was valued at $2 million.
The second season of The Real World Homecoming should be a more interesting experience than the first because the Los Angeles cast was so underrated and hasn't been seen together in quite some time. There will be familiar faces with Tami in the house, the former star of VH1's Basketball Wives who, in the original Real World: Los Angeles, had her jaw wired shut during the series so she could lose weight because keto wasn't even a thing in the '90s. Who could forget that sweet Southern drawl from Kentucky-native Jon as he played out his fish-out-of-water story for everyone to see? Brennan is now a church youth pastor and performs as a country music singer. The Real World fans will have to see if Brennan's political views are still the source of drama in the new reunion. Details about which cast will reunite next for season 3 will be revealed at a later date by Paramount+.
