Warning! Spoilers for My Hero Academia chapter 330 ahead!
As the ending of Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia approaches, major antagonist All For One is returning in the form of his fusion with his protégé, Tomura Shigaraki. Much like series protagonist Izuku Midoriya, Shigaraki has always been framed as the successor to his powerful mentor, but only recently have the most sinister consequences of his transformation become clear. If and when this process ends, All For One will be more powerful than ever, compounding the horrors the heroes may have to face.
In chapter 330, Shigaraki is in the midst of a battle with the United States’s number one superhero, Star and Stripe, a student of All For One’s ultimate nemesis, All-Might. The hero attempts to apply her quirk, New Order, to make it so that Tomura Shigaraki will die if he moves, but it doesn’t work because Shigaraki is literally not himself anymore. Shigaraki is rapidly losing his sense of self, unsure of whether or not he should call himself by his own name, but All For One has not taken complete control of his body as some fans suspected may happen.
Rather than the mentor replacing the student, the two antagonists' personalities are merging together into a new person. The implications of this are horrifying, especially on an existential level, as the readers see the two fusing together as if All For One were a parasite. But the idea of All For One having Shigaraki’s younger, healthier body, and Shigaraki possessing All For One’s superior mind cultivated over a supernaturally long life also represents possibly the biggest external threat seen in the series so far, even beyond the way Shigaraki was able to get around Stars and Stripe’s reality-bending quirk.
All For One’s mind being integrated with Shigaraki’s sidesteps a lot of the problems Shigaraki would probably have inheriting such a powerful quirk (or rather, collection of quirks). Even with the preparation his body has been put through, he still probably wouldn’t be able to fully control it immediately. Having All For One’s intelligence and experience would fix that. However, it seems like All For One would also probably benefit from having Shigaraki’s personality infused with himself. Shigaraki’s hatred is what caused this unusual fusion as opposed to All For One simply possessing Shigaraki – that hatred would only serve to make a more dangerous threat out of the supervillain. All For One’s cunning mixed with Shigaraki’s raw ruthlessness would be a terrifying combination.
If All For One’s plan to merge with Shigaraki goes as expected, he could become capable of fulfilling a far worse vision for the world than even he originally expected. Not only will his physical power increase due to taking Shigaraki’s body and obtaining his Decay quirk, but also the intense, hateful nature of his mind. Meanwhile, Shigaraki, who has grown so much as a villain already, may lose part of himself but will only gain more advantages over the heroes. It’s a situation where both All For One and Tomura Shigaraki win, and the world of My Hero Academia loses because of it.
