Legendary horror director John Carpenter recently revealed his writing process for the score of Halloween Kills. Famous for writing, directing, and composing the original 1978 Halloween, Carpenter has returned as producer and composer for David Gordon Green's recent entries into the Halloween saga.
Halloween Kills, the second part of a Halloween trilogy by Green, is designed to pick up after Carpenter's original classic, seemingly disregarding all of the other Halloween sequels and spin-offs that have happened in-between. However, like Halloween II, the 1981 sequel that came before it, Halloween Kills immediately picks up from where 2018's Halloween left off as Michael Myers escapes from the burning basement in which he was left to die. Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, and Andi Matichak all reprise their roles as the mother-daughter-granddaughter Strode team looking to defeat Myers once and for all, recruiting other members from the Haddonfield community to help them do so.

In an interview with Uproxx, Carpenter described his compositional process. He reworked the original, infamous Halloween score in tandem with the footage of Halloween Kills, updating and improvising upon it when necessary. Despite being the father of the franchise, Carpenter claims his main contribution for the film is in the score, collaborating with Green to fit his vision but otherwise leaving the director to do as he feels.
We started with a basic situation of a score that exists in 1978, the one I did way back when. So, we take various parts of that and we amplify it and bring it into the modern era, modern sounds, and that’s 40 percent of what you hear. Then the rest is we improvise right on the spot in terms of what’s necessary for the movie – whether it’s for the characters, for the story, atmosphere – whatever is needed, we’re there. We’re there to fill it in. And David, we have a big spotting session with him where he says, “I want something here and I want something like this,” and that’s what we go off of.

Like David Gordon Green's films, the soundtrack to Halloween Kills appears to be a synthesis between the old and the new, referencing the legacy of 1978's original while updating it for the modern era. Halloween Kills sees the return of Laurie Strode and four other characters from Carpenter's Halloween, including the two children that Laurie was in charge of babysitting, Lindsey Wallace and Tommy Doyle, now fully grown adults. However, Halloween Kills does threaten to break away from tradition by potentially revealing Myers' face behind the mask, with the trailer showing Karen (Judy Greer) holding the infamous mask while berating the serial murderer.
As the final installment of the trilogy, Halloween Ends, is expected in 2022, it is doubtful the final defeat of Michael Myers will happen in Halloween Kills. However, twists and drama can still be expected as Green's rebooted sequels have not yet revealed whether Laurie and Michael are biological siblings or if the director plans on taking the killer's obsession with Laurie down a different route. Whatever paths Halloween Kills may take, what is for sure is that there will be a lot of killing and one familiar killer score.
