According to PlayStation's Senior Vice President of Platform Experience, Hideaki Nishino, there is still a long list of "fantastic ideas" in place future PS5 firmware updates. Since its launch in November 2020, the new-gen console has only received two noteworthy system software patches.
PlayStation 5's first major update went live in April, its most significant addition allowing players to store games on external drives such as USBs. The software changes further unleashed new user interface features and even gave way to extra HDR options for compatible titles. In many respects, the April update served as a precursor to far more robust firmware, which landed just this month in the form of Update 21.02-04 and enabled support for M.2 SSD storage expansion. The unfavorable horizontal layout of the Trophy menu received a long-awaited adjustment as well, implementing a design that bears much more in common with the baked-in Trophy lists on PS4. But what else might Sony have in store for future PS5 system software improvements?
Speaking with the PlayStation Blog, Hideaki Nishino offered a cursory explanation for the methodology behind implementing the PlayStation 5's internal systems. Nishino and team looked at the PS4's core offerings to analyze its most and least popular features, then compiled a "gigantic list of things before PS5 launch that [they] wanted to do." The executive said not everything made the cut in the end; however, there are still "interesting, exciting, fantastic ideas on the list" in question. Presumably, future changes will borrow from that well of mysterious ideas, as well as take inspiration from feedback concerning PS5's existing features. Nishino continued,
"Our updates aren’t just about the [major] firmware updates. If you carefully look at the PS5 system, over the network we are changing the UX behavior quite often. Sometimes we do some customization for a certain group of people to see how these features are used. So, it’s dynamic now."
Because Nishino didn't share specifics, there is no telling what Sony could have in the pipeline for future updates. The aforementioned Trophy menu changes indicate the company does listen to fans, though. As such, perhaps the much-coveted return of Folders will someday take center stage?
Though the PS5 continues to evolve in terms of the basic user experience, players still have quite a few wishlist items they hope Sony addresses down the line. PS4-like Themes remain at the top of the list for many a PlayStation fan. Trophy Hunters hold out hope that accessing the new and improved Trophy menu will eventually require fewer button presses. And, as referenced above, hopes are high for the reintroduction of Folders.
