Baldur's Gate 3 Release Date Window: Full Launch (NOT Early Access)

Since October 6, 2020, PC and Stadia players have had early access to Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3. With around a year of early access under its belt, however, the full Baldur's Gate 3 release date isn't close yet; Larian has confirmed it won't officially launch until at least 2022.

As with its previous game, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Larian first launched an early access build of Baldur's Gate 3 as part of its development process. The pre-launch build allows early adopters to experience a portion of the game, playing through its branched choices and giving feedback to Larian along the way. That opportunity comes at a cost, however, as purchasing a full-priced copy of Baldur's Gate 3 is required to play even the incomplete early access build.

Those waiting for a complete build of Baldur's Gate 3 before buying should prepare themselves for a bit of a wait. In a June 2021 interview with GameSpot, Larian Studios said it's aiming for a full Baldur's Gate 3 release date in 2022. No specific date was given. Instead, studio founder Swen Vincke said "We are really trying to get the game done by next year. It's not gonna release this year for sure." On the game's Steam page, Larian says it expects the game to be in early access "for at least one year." That point has almost passed, but the Steam page also notes Baldur's Gate 3 will "be ready when it's ready."

Baldur's Gate 3's Steam page still says that, while Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3 is largely locked in, Acts 2 and 3 are still a "work in progress." The game's latest major update, Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 5, added many community-requested features, including a small story change to the game's tutorial and added dialogue in non-cutscene portions of gameplay. It also revamped the camping system and player-created characters' background goals. These are micro-level changes, and Larian is likely working on the rest of the game behind the scenes, but it still appears quite far from the official Baldur's Gate 3 release.

Larian hasn't been shy about warning players that Baldur's Gate 3 early access is not for everyone. The game is largely stable but still a bit rough around the edges, and Larian is looking for feedback about the systems, combat, and more as it continues work on the game. Those taking part in early access will be able to look forward to more content being added as time progresses, but RPG fans looking for a polished game should wait until Baldur's Gate 3's official release.
