Sex Education: Who Plays Hope, Moordale’s New Headteacher

Here’s who plays Moordale’s new Headteacher in season 3 of Sex Education. The end of season 2 saw the students of Moordale Secondary throw an erotic, space-focused version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet that landed Headmaster Michael Groff in hot water. After being forced into taking sabbatical, Moordale hired a new headteacher in Hope Haddon, who came onto the scene with a fresh new vision for the school and a lot more rules that changed the overall tone of the lively student community.

When she first came to Moordale, Hope tried to connect with the students by establishing that she herself used to roam the halls of the school. From then on, she began drastically changing things under the façade of being a cool headteacher and someone who only wanted the best for her students. Militaristic policies, single-file hallway lines, changing the school’s dress code that pushed the students into uniforms, and disrespecting their individual expression and personhood ultimately saw the students clashing with her vision for Moordale. Hope Haddon is played perfectly by Jemima Kirke in Sex Education season 3, coming onto the scene and instantly making an impression, for better or for worse.Related: Why Sex Education Season 3’s Reviews Are So Positive

Kirke is best known for playing Jessa Johansson in the HBO comedy Girls, which starred Lena Dunham in the leading role. Kirke played Jessa in all six seasons of the series, which catapulted her into the Hollywood spotlight. After Girls ended in 2017, Kirke starred in feature films such as the dark comedy The Little Hours, alongside Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza and Community and GLOW actress Alison Brie, and the supernatural horror Ava’s Possessions. Kirke also starred as Andrea Moore alongside her real-life sister Lola Kirke, Ben Mendelsohn, and Fifty Shades of Grey’s Jamie Dornan in the relationship drama Untogether. She had a small role in the romantic drama Sylvie’s Love, which starred Tessa Thompson, Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page, and Nnamdi Asomugha.

In addition to Girls, Kirke’s most notable TV roles have been in HBO’s High Maintenance and Netflix’s Maniac starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. The actress’ follow-up to Sex Education will be a starring role in Hulu’s adaptation of Conversations with Friends, which is based on the novel by Sally Rooney. In 2017, Kirke appeared in Zayn Malik’s music video for the song “Dusk Till Dawn” with Sia. She’s since been featured in several music videos alongside Australian musician and partner Alex Cameron. Kirke has also directed a music video and a short film, but outside of acting, she is perhaps best known for her work as a painter, having graduated with an art degree.

Kirke portrayed Hope as cruel and someone who desperately tried to control the students, which was (at least partly) due to the lack of control she had in her own life. After the way Sex Education season 3 ended, however, it seems doubtful that she will return as Hope Haddon in a potential season 4, though she certainly affected the students in a way that will likely continue being felt in the future.
