Kathryn Hahn Still Doesn’t Know When Agatha Harkness Returns In MCU

Kathryn Hahn has confirmed that she still does not know if or when Agatha Harkness will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress portrayed the villainous Agatha in the first Disney+ Marvel series, WandaVision. The show debuted last year and has since earned Hahn an Emmy nomination.

WandaVision radically changed the Marvel formula by bringing the action to the small screen and the small town of Westview, New Jersey. In the series, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) find themselves mysteriously trapped in a town that mirrors many of the classic sitcoms that Wanda grew up watching during her tumultuous childhood in Sokovia. By the end of the series, it is revealed that her quirky neighbor Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) is a centuries-old witch named Agatha Harkness who has manipulated Wanda to steal her immense power. During the climactic battle, Wanda manages to trap her in her role as Agnes – effectively imprisoning Agatha in Westview for the foreseeable future.

With WandaVision now in her rearview and an Emmy nomination under her belt, Kathryn Hahn recently opened up to Variety about the possibility of a return to her endlessly memed role as Agatha Harkness. Though no return to the character has been announced yet, the actress admitted to wanting to return to the role. Hahn said:

"I don't know. I hope somewhere. I hope anywhere. I love her madly. Listen, I'm with you. But who knows?"

So it’s clear that Kathryn Hahn wants another go at Agatha Harkness, but if a return does happen, it likely won’t be in the same format. That’s because Elizabeth Olsen recently confirmed that WandaVision will not get a season 2, and Wanda’s story will continue in other MCU projects. While this effectively rules out the possibility of simply returning to Westview for another go-around, it means that if Agatha does escape her prison and return to cause trouble, it will need to happen as a crossover with another Marvel project.

There’s a strong argument to be made that Marvel shouldn’t leave Agatha Harkness waiting in the wings forever. Post-WandaVision, Wanda has quickly become one of the MCU’s most fascinating heroes, and Agatha is the closest thing she has to an arch-nemesis. Knowing that Agatha is still alive and living her life as Agnes in Westview, the door remains open for her to return and continue testing Wanda's powers. In the meantime, Elizabeth Olsen will return to her role as Wanda Maximoff when The Scarlet Witch shows up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is slated for a March 25, 2022 release.
