Olivia Colman and Sally Hawkins have joined the cast of the upcoming film Wonka. Based on characters from Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka will tell the story of the young chocolatier and his rise to fame. Timothée Chalamet is set to star as Willy Wonka. Paddington director Paul King will helm the movie, which begins principal photography this week in London.
Per THR, Olivia Colman and Sally Hawkins will be joining Chalamet in Wonka. Rowan Atkinson, best known for his seminal character Mr. Bean, is also a new addition to the cast. Warner Bros. has kept mum on plot details and character biographies, but it is rumored that Colman will be portraying a villain. It won’t be King’s first time collaborating with Hawkins, as the two paired up for the Paddington films.
King has also culled together a number of Paddington alums for the film, both in front of and behind the camera. Tom Davis, Simoon Farnaby, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith will appear in the film, and the studio has enlisted Paddington’s editor Mark Everson and its costume designer Lindy Hemming to help bring Wonka to life. Earlier this month it was announced that Keegan-Michael Key would be joining Wonka as well.
Willy Wonka first appeared on the screen in 1971, with Gene Wilder starring as the eccentric chocolatier. Tim Burton released his own spin on the book in 2005. Now there seems to be a renewed interest in Roald Dahl’s iconic character, and Wonka isn’t the only candyman-inspired project in the works. Taika Waititi is reportedly developing two animated series for Netflix, with one focusing on the Oompa-Loompas. And with the recent acquisition of Roald Dahl’s catalogue by Netflix, fans can look forward to more Dahl-inspired content in the future. In the meantime, Wonka is set to premiere on March 17, 2023.
