King in Black Has Made Marvel's Most Disgusting Symbiote Even Worse

Warning: contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Agony #1!

Marvel's Life Foundation symbiotes have their fair share of special powers and Agony's acidic saliva is unique to her. Now, she has another distinctive characteristic since the end of the King in Black event. She and her new host are very fond of trophy collecting.

Agony has had two human hosts prior to Gemma Shin, her current host. This symbiote was introduced in 1993 and previously the only things that were distinct about her were her purple coloration, her ability to spit acid and the ability to process and replicate chemicals orally. Her hosts have not been as consistent as Venom, Carnage, or even her sister, Scream, though her newest is certainly rather interesting. Gemma has had just three comic appearances so far, beginning with Extreme Carnage Alpha #1. A brief flashback within her newest appearance shows her being on a coffee run when Knull attacked, though how she and Agony met exactly has not been revealed as of yet.

Extreme Carnage: Agony #1 has the creative team of Alyssa Wong, Fran Galán, Danilo S. Beyruth, Jim Campbell, and VC Travis Lanham. In this issue, Gemma Shin is given more focus, as fans can see the dynamic between her and Agony. Gemma is the Deputy Communications Director for Senator Krane's Friends of Humanity campaign. She is disrespected by many of her male co-workers, being treated like an assistant. However, with Agony and Carnage's help, she's done letting anyone push her around. She's exacting her revenge and she's collecting grotesque keepsakes to celebrate.

After getting frustrated at work with the harassment, she decides to go for an evening run. This proves to be a very productive choice for her since she is able to take her anxieties out on a couple of guys who want to hurt her. She lets her symbiote alter take over and confronts her attackers. She spits acid on them, slashes them, and bites them, leaving behind a gory mess. She is later shown back at her place doing some interior design work with her latest trophies. Her kills make up a macabre collection and she isn't done building it. After all, having only one arm up on the wall just doesn't quite feel balanced and another may be needed.

This is the most grotesque that Agony has ever been. While her acid-spitting ability leads to assumptions that crossing her path would be unwise, this issue reveals just how dangerous this particular symbiote has become. Her claws and acidity are nothing to mess with and she is the most visceral symbiote in Extreme Carnage thus far - a title typically held by Carnage in his various appearances. While this is one of the most disturbing exhibitions of symbiote power, it is refreshing to see Agony get the spotlight. She has been one of Marvel's most under-utilized Life Foundation symbiotes, with far less development compared to Scream. Now, it is clear that she is done being in the background. Agony is ready to come into her own and forge her identity heading into the future now that the King in Black event changed her life forever.
