The Witcher season 2 will introduce more characters from the vast universe of the books and video games, and fans are hoping these will include the Wild Hunt, and there have been some clues pointing at their arrival. The realm of fantasy has a number of worlds with their own mythologies, and one of the most extensive and popular ones is that of The Witcher. Created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is a series of novels and short stories that gained more popularity when they branched out to video games and were also adapted into a movie and TV show in Poland in 2001 and 2002. An English version arrived in 2019 thanks to Netflix, and fans are now getting ready for the second season.
The first season of Netflix’s The Witcher was a hit with viewers, even if it had a complicated timeline, as it followed three characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of the season. These characters are Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), an enhanced monster hunter and the title witcher; Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress with a troubled past; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra who has powers of her own. As there are a number of creatures and characters in the universe of The Witcher, season 1 couldn’t introduce all of them, but season 2 will introduce more, and quite possibly the Wild Hunt as well.
Although they don’t appear in the teasers nor the first full trailer for The Witcher season 2, fans are more than convinced that the Wild Hunt will make an appearance in the new season. This is thanks to a series of set photos that made their way to the internet in March 2021, showing five heavily armored warriors in armored horses that look a lot like the Wild Hunt. The pics were shared by Redanian Intelligence, who added that their sources have confirmed that these are the Wild Hunt, but as with everything, nothing will be properly confirmed until shown in a trailer or in the show. It’s worth pointing out, however, that the Wild Hunt were already theorized to appear in The Witcher season 2, especially in connection to Yennefer’s disappearance at the end of season 1, though that might not be possible anymore.
The Wild Hunt are mentioned in the book Sword of Destiny and make their first appearance in the novel Time of Contempt, but they are best known for their role in the video game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Also known as Wraiths of Mörhogg, the Wild Hunt are believed to be a group of specters that gallop in the sky and are considered an omen of war, but in reality, they are a group of Aen Elle elves (who also call themselves the Dearg Ruadhri, which means Red Riders). Their purpose is to find and capture slaves from other worlds, and at one point they target Ciri for her Elder Blood. The Wild Hunt wear skeletal armor to make themselves look more threatening and intimidate people, ride black horses, and use projections to appear more spectral, thus why the belief of them being specters that gallop through the sky. The Wild Hunt’s appearance in The Witcher season 2 makes sense due to their connection to Ciri in the books, as they started going after her after sensing her Elder Blood.
As mentioned above, at some point it was theorized that the Wild Hunt could be connected to Yennefer’s disappearance, as she could have been caught by them, but the first trailer revealed that she was found by the Nilfgaardian army. The warriors in the set photos do look like the Wild Hunt, and if they are to appear in The Witcher season 2, hopefully they won’t be a “one episode character” as happened to many in season 1, and they will have a proper storyline so those who are not familiar with the books and video games can know more about them.
