What If Writer Responds To Marvel/Star Wars Crossover Episode Possibility

The director and writer of Marvel's upcoming animated series What If...? respond to the possibility of an MCU and Star Wars crossover. With Disney owning both properties, talks have long swirled about bringing together two of the most popular IP's in history. Marvel has long been a mega-franchise for Disney and with 25 films currently out and many more on the way, the MCU shows no signs of slowing down. As the studio ventures into streaming, Marvel is gearing up to release their latest series, What If...?, on August 11.

What If...? will serve as an anthology of sorts, reimagining famous MCU events in different ways, like Peggy Carter taking the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers and Yondu abducting T'Challa instead of Peter Quill. The series will be a part of the larger MCU and explore the possibilities of the multiverse after it was broken wide open during Loki's six episode run earlier this summer. The titular question will also allow the series to explore vast possibilities that would otherwise be left by the wayside in favor of the more centralized plot of the MCU.

Now, renewed interest around an intersecting Star Wars and MCU plot has happened as the series' release approaches and writer AC Bradley revealed to Collider that she was actually interested in bringing Star Wars characters into the fold. The writer cites Luke Skywalker as being the perfect candidate for the Avengers, but she reveals that they were told to stick within the MCU. However, director Bryan Andrews revealed that the door may still be open if fans "clamor" enough for a Star Wars crossover. Read their statements below:

AC Bradley: “I was kind of notorious for trying to get a Star Wars character involved. We did try at one point, but there was.. it’s kind of like, ‘Play with the sandbox you’re given. We gave you the entire MCU. Run with that.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, but Luke Skywalker would be an amazing… Avenger.”

Bryan Andrews: “You know, it’s true, we did have those thoughts. We were just like, ‘Woo!’ And then that’s when they were like, ‘Hey, guys, there are a little bit of guidelines. Stick with the MCU.’ But who knows? If fans watch it and love it and clamor enough, in future episodes, who knows what could happen? What if, right?”

What If...? would be the perfect show for a Marvel and Star Wars crossover. Not only would it not be constrained by typical monetary concerns that would come along with bringing together the two cinematic universes, but it would also not be beholden to the ongoing plots of the respective franchises. It would also truly allow for some crazy scenarios, ones that some fans have been waiting for for quite some time.

Of course, there's already a Marvel and Star Wars crossover happening behind the scenes. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is working on a Star Wars film, although details surrounding that are slim. Still, it seems entirely possible that it could happen one day, if only for the fact that bringing the two properties together would only serve to boost profits for the Mouse House. Whether or not it happens in What If...? remains to be seen, but, like the central question of the show, it has to be on everyone's minds at Disney.
