Actor Curran Walters has opened up about the struggles he faced while filming Titans season 3, chiefly the challenge of trying to act through Red Hood's mask. Walters first appeared recurrently throughout Titan's first season as Jason Todd/the second Robin, before becoming a series regular for season 2. In the show, he is the replacement for Brenton Thwaites' Dick Grayson, the original Robin after he steps out from Batman's shadow and eventually becomes Nightwing.
With the first three episodes having premiered on HBO Max on August 12th, Titans season 3 sees the titular heroes move from San Francisco to Jason and Dick's home territory of Gotham City. There they must deal with the apparent death of Jason, as well as the arrival of a new lethal vigilante, Red Hood, leading a one-man war against Gotham's underworld. Season 3 wasted no time in revealing Red Hood to be a resurrected Jason, a twist that comics fans knew from the jump, with Nightwing and the team growing more and more conflicted over the actions of their former friend.
Talking to Collider about Jason's shift in character between seasons from being Robin to Red Hood, Walters explained that there was a difference in fighting style that he had to get used to. Walters was also asked if there was an adjustment period for his new costume. He responded by claiming that his Robin costume was "more comfortable and easy to move in" and that he initially found "acting ... and doing stunts with a mask" that entirely covered his head quite challenging. "It's such a different costume. I would have to say that the Robin costume is, all around, more comfortable and easy to move in. Obviously, getting used to acting with a mask and doing stunts with a mask was challenging at the beginning and, let alone, just the new costumes. You've always got to figure out what works for you."
Red Hood's mask is an iconic part of the character, fully encapsulating the characters head and arguably being closer to a helmet than anything else. Naturally then, it was important for Titans to make this a key part of the character when bringing Red Hood to life for the first time in season 3. It's understandable that Walters would struggle with adjusting to the helmet, but regardless of challenges, the actor has done an excellent job of depicting Jason's darker side and his transition from hero to antagonist.
It will be interesting to see how Walters' Red Hood develops over the rest of the season, and if redemption is even possible for the character. Thus far he has succeeded in driving a wedge between the members of the Titans, and even killed a member of the team, too. With Starfire's (Anna Diop) evil sister Blackfire (Damaris Lewis) also set to arrive later in the season, fans are undoubtedly curious to see how quickly Titans will wrap up Red Hood's arc, or if he will somehow find himself siding with Blackfire in some capacity. Walters has teased that episode 5 with delve deeply into how Jason became Red Hood, and with new episodes of Titans set to arrive on August 19th, fans won't have long to find out.
