Peacemaker Becomes Uncle Sam in Suicide Squad Propaganda Art

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Suicide Squad.

A new piece of The Suicide Squad fan art sees Peacemaker at the center of Uncle Sam-inspired propaganda. Created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette, Peacemaker made his comic debut in 1966 as a pacifist diplomat who, ironically, uses excessive force to ensure peace. John Cena recently brought this “douchey version of Captain America” to the DC Extended Universe in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad—which also sets up HBO Max’s Peacemaker spinoff series.

In The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker joins Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), and the rest of Task Force X on their mission to destroy all traces of Project Starfish on Corto Maltese. It’s ultimately revealed that the United States was behind Project Starfish all along and, when Flag elects to reveal this to the public, Peacemaker kills him to protect the country’s interests. As Flag dies, he utters “Peacemaker, what a joke.”

Artist Siningnisid on Instagram recently shared some art imagining Peacemaker as an Uncle Sam figure. The piece sees him pointing an accusing finger just like Uncle Sam on that iconic “I Want You” recruitment poster from World War I. However, while Uncle Sam urged young men to enlist, Peacemaker’s poster comes off as more of a warning. Check it out below:

When Peacemaker first says “I cherish peace with all my heart. I don’t care how many men, women, and children I need to kill to get it,” the line’s absurdity plays for laughs but also sets Cena’s character up as a compelling third act antagonist. It’s clear in Peacemaker's eyes that he doesn’t necessarily want to kill Flag or Ratcatcher 2, but is committed to his twisted sense of patriotism/duty. The film raises many questions (ex. his relationship with Peacemaker Sr.) as to what drove him to be this way. Gunn has said that these questions are why Peacemaker is getting a spinoff series that will take place both before and after the events of The Suicide Squad.

Before the battle with Starro the Conqueror, Peacemaker is shot and seemingly killed by Bloodsport. The Suicide Squad's post-credits scene reveals that Peacemaker was found alive in Jotunheim’s rubble. For whatever reason, John Economos (Steve Agee), Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) need him to “save the f-cking world.” Who knows, maybe that’ll entail posting propaganda all over town.
