Thor: 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Comic Books, According To Reddit

Reddit is home to plenty of unpopular opinions, and with so many differing thoughts from comics fans, it's not surprising that plenty of debates arise when the site's users discuss one of Marvel's most popular characters.

The Thor comics have gone through a great deal of evolution from their early days. From Jane Foster's time with the hammer to the destruction of Asgard or the anti-hero status of Loki, each major story arc brings with it a legion of fans who love the changes as well as those who believe the status quo should have remained how it was. These viewpoints might not be shared by the majority of fans, though, in regards to Thor's adventures on the page.

10 Jane Foster Is Bland

Jane Foster's time with Mjolnir is celebrated by fans, with the character even returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to lift the hammer for the first time. While there are some criticisms of the start of the run, one Reddit user suggests that Jane Foster was never interesting, to begin with.

They proclaim her to be bland and generic, with her only interesting run being in the pages of All-New, All-Different Avengers. Although there are debates surrounding the impact of the Mighty Thor narrative it's definitely unpopular to suggest that Jane Foster doesn't bring anything to the table at all, considering she has remained in Asgardian roles since, including as a modern Valkyrie.

9 The Worthiness Loophole

Fans know that Mjolnir is one of the most powerful weapons in the Marvel Universe and that anyone who wields it will possess the powers of Thor. In defending Beta Ray Bill though, one Reddit user mentions that this loophole has really ruined the Thor run for a lot of fans (although not for the Reddit commenter themselves).

They suggest that the vagueness of the enchantment means anyone can lift it when really it should have only have been the God of Thunder all along. Audiences would argue that this worthiness loophole allowed for a lot of genuinely fun moments in the comics and on-screen, though, including the creation of the likes of Beta Ray Bill, Throg, and The Mighty Thor.

8 Beta Ray Bill Hype

Beta Ray Bill is one of the most popular characters in the comics. One of the earliest people to be worthy of Mjolnir, the character is loyal, noble, and boasts a truly incredible design. Beta Ray Bill has actually amassed a bit of a cult following, with fans eager to see him on screen in light of his statue MCU cameo.

One Reddit user has done the unthinkable, though, and opened up a whole thread discussing the fact they don't understand the hype around Beta Ray Bill. Plenty of fans have jumped to the character's defense demonstrating how unpopular the opinion really is, as he represents a vastly different area of the galaxy and is a perfect anthesis to Thor, acting almost as an everyman.

7 Boring Thor

During the debate surrounding Beta Ray Bill, one user proclaimed that this alien was actually superior to of the original God of Thunder. They go as far as to say, quite controversially (and they apologize if they offend anyone), that Thor is actually quite boring.

Their reasoning is that despite the incredible magic and weird mythology Thor has always been kind of "meh." Thor is of course one of the most popular characters of all time, and his portrayal on the page from his cool villains to his personal arc has often been celebrated by fans. His has been a part of plenty of narratives that fundamentally question Thor as a character and is all the better for it.

6 Ranking The Marvel Events

The year 2015 was huge for Marvel crossover events with the revisited iteration of Secret Wars. There have been plenty in the interim, but then War Of The Realms came along and quickly shifted everything again. Fans flocked to enjoy this Thor tale, but few claim it's one of Marvel's best events ever.

One Reddit user has suggested that War Of The Realms is the best event, hands down, since that 2015 Secret Wars. This controversially cuts out several major moments including Civil War II, Inhumans vs. X-Men, and Secret Empire, each of which has a fan following of its own and redefined the Marvel Universe in their own way.

5 Jason Aaron's Run

Jason Aaron has often been named one of the best Thor writers of all time. His run with the comic completely changed the game, led to events like War Of The Realms, and added a great deal to the character and his legacy. It's not an unpopular opinion to suggest his run is legendary.

It is however controversial to suggest that it did more harm than good for the character, as one Reddit user did. They claim that the comic actually meandered for five long years, ultimately destroying the mythos that had been created for Thor. This seems like a fairly niche take, as the run brought Thor to a modern audience, recreating the mythos for new generations to enjoy.

4 Gorr The God-Butcher Praise

It's hardly controversial to suggest that Gorr The God-Butcher isn't one of Thor's most intriguing new villains. With the MCU teasing plenty of new deities, it's not surprising that this beast of a butcher will be making his debut on screen. However, there are plenty of controversial opinions as to Gorr's ranking within Marvel Comics.

Although the praise is certainly worthy, in one Reddit thread, fans are going as far as to say that Gorr is the best new villain, Thor's greatest foe, and is included in the best comics arcs of all time. Such definitive opinions of course rule out other amazing arcs from talented writers and artists, and not everyone holds the view that Gorr is really the big bad some have suggested him to be. Loki may still hold the bad guy crown for most Thor fans.

3 Superiority Of Comics

Comparisons are a key part of the human language, and fans love to make comparisons between the Marvel movies and the comics. One Reddit user has made this very comparison by saying that the MCU run of Thor has completely ruined the mythology that was built up in the comics.

Of course, audiences understand these are two different interpretations and that both have their merits. But throughout the thread, there is a growing distaste for the cinematic portrayal of these stories and characters, with fans voicing their frustration with Thor's apparent mistreatment. Regardless, the source material has been honored in unique ways, and the characters hold the spirit of the originals.

2 The Height Of Thor Comics

There have been so many talented people working on Thor and his wider narratives, even giving life to side characters such as Loki and Valkyrie. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's mark on the series cannot be overlooked, but fans seem to think that no one will ever surpass Walt Simonson.

There is a whole thread dedicated to Simonson's classic run, and although it is iconic, it's controversial to suggest that nothing has ever been better. Simonson's time on the book had some missteps, and Jason Aaron's name has to at least be in the conversation. Although good points are raised, any definitive answer is sure to be unpopular.

1 Unworthy Thor's Arc

Unworthy Thor was created to allow the Mighty Thor to rise and gave Marvel the opportunity to explore a very different version of the God of Thunder. Evolution is important for a character to move forward without getting stale. Writers must find new stories to tell about long-established characters so fans don't get bored of the status quo.

Yet plenty of fans have controversially suggested that not only is the Unworthy Thor too political in its portrayal but also that the character is unidentifiable from its origins. These arguments imply that change within stories should be discouraged, despite the fact characters have to go on new journies to rediscover their core.
