The 8 Best Big Brother Seasons For New Fans To Watch, According to Reddit

Big Brother is an immensely popular reality show. Thanks to its cutthroat, backstab-happy gameplay and unique premise (which includes the never-before-done ability to watch the game play out in real-time through live feeds), Big Brother has enjoyed 20 years of unending popularity.

But, like any show that has aired 23 seasons, it's hard to separate the good from the bad. Some seasons are more forgettable than others, and some are all-time classics that any self-respecting Big Brother fan should watch. Luckily, Reddit is a great resource filled with dedicated fans who know the show inside and out.

8 Season 2

There's a good argument to be made about starting at the beginning. However, like many television shows, Big Brother experienced some growing pains in its first season and many fans tend to agree that it's not worth watching today.

As Reddit user qsxpkn16 writes, "I'd say start with season 2 then just watch it in order so you wouldn't get spoiled." It's a good piece of advice. Not only is the second season vastly superior to the first, but it's a great way to jump into Big Brother while experiencing all of the gameplay changes, best and most creative Big Brother twists, fan-favorite players, and classic showmances, without getting spoiled by later seasons. It may not make for the greatest season on its own, but the show's second is a great jumping-off point.

7 Season 6

Airing throughout the summer of 2005, Big Brother 6 was quite popular. According to Reddit user EmpiricalMonarch, "The story is amazing and you will learn all of the elements that make Big Brother great: power struggles and power shifts, backstabs, heroes to love and villains to hate, an amazing underdog story, some of the best drama the show’s seen, and a touch of showmance element if you’re into that."

As noted, the greatest aspect of the season is arguably the power struggle between the Friendship and Sovereign 6 alliances. It makes for tantalizing viewing and prevented the "steamrolling" that typically occurs in more boring seasons of the show.

6 Season 7

Big Brother scored a great one-two punch with seasons 6 and 7. Big Brother 7 is technically known as Big Brother: All-Stars, owing to the return of some of Big Brother's most likable players, including Boogie and Will Kirby. Of course, the returning cast is a large draw for the season. As is the case with All-Stars seasons, Big Brother 7 is filled with entertaining characters who all came to play the game.

And while the "returning players" aspect may seem daunting for new viewers, that is not to be feared. According to Reddit user pntjr, "It doesn’t matter that it’s all returnees, it’s just a phenomenal season top to bottom. It was my first season, definitely watch it."

5 Season 8

Big Brother 8 is looked on quite favorably by the fanbase, and it contains one of the most unique and unforgettable winners in the history of the show. It also makes for a great entry point into the series.

As Reddit user BeyonceVEVO writes, "8 is good for casuals/new viewers because it’s got gameplay, a lot of drama and a great storyline going with the houseguests Dick/Daniele, Jessica/Carol, Joe/Dustin. I think it’s a super easy season to get started with which will get them hooked."

4 Season 10

It seems like Big Brother 10 is a huge fan favorite, at least if Reddit is any indication. Airing throughout the summer of 2008, the season is notable for the outstanding gameplay of fan-favorite, Dan Gheesling. It's also a great season to get into, as it did away with many of the unfavorable twists that were introduced in earlier seasons of the show. Big Brother 10 was widely touted as a "back to basics" season, and it makes for some easy and enjoyable viewing.

According to outlasttheunexpected, "[Season 10] is flawless from start to finish." This opinion is mirrored by biiigpatsguy, who responds with, "But if you watch BB10 first it’s basically gonna be all downhill," implying that season 10 is by far the greatest season in the history of Big Brother.

3 Season 16

Big Brother 16 is quite notable for its incredible cast. Featuring the likes of Zach Rance, Donny Thompson, Nicole Franzel, and Cody Calafiore, the season has what could be considered the greatest cast of the modern era.

In fact, both Nicole and Cody later reappeared for Big Brother: All-Stars in 2020. As Reddit user daisukealways writes, "It was my first season and it hooked me." keleidoskope agrees, stating, "16 because a big alliance dominating the game will make it easy for someone who has never seen the show before."

2 Season 17

Unfortunately, many fans feel that Big Brother is on a downward slope. There's no denying that the game has changed, and not necessarily for the better. The show could also do with a few reinventions to keep things fresh, as 23 seasons' worth of the same core gameplay has resulted in some dry and predictable viewing.

But that's not to say that all modern seasons are instant write-offs. Many fans adore Big Brother 17 and regard it as the greatest of the modern era. According to somethingdown22, "[Watch] 17 if you want a modern season." This opinion is mirrored in the same thread by Healiosart, who states, "My 2 favorite modern seasons of BB are 17 and 20."

1 Season 20

Airing throughout 2018, Big Brother 20 is another great modern season that stands toe-to-toe with any of the older ones. As Healiosart writes, "I see BB20 as the equivalent to Survivor: David vs. Goliath. Both are modern seasons with great phases of their respective shows and fun cast of players to root for and to root against."

Certain-Bowler8735 also states, "20 is a really good recent season because there isn’t a crazy amount of twists." If watching old seasons proves too difficult owing to their poor camera quality and slow editing style, then there's certainly no going wrong with the more fast-paced Big Brother 20.
