Warning: SPOILERS for Loki episode 4, "The Nexus Event".
Old Loki (Richard E. Grant) made a surprise appearance in Loki episode 4's mid-credits scene and his suit resembled the Halloween costume Vision (Paul Bettany) wore in WandaVision. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was pruned by Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) after he and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) learned the truth that the Time-Keepers are robotic puppets. To Loki's shock, he reappeared alive and was confronted by several Loki Variants, including an alligator Loki and Old Loki clad in a suit that resembles the God of Mischief's classic Marvel Comics costume.
In WandaVision's Halloween episode, Vision, Ralph Bohner posing as Pietro Maximoff (Evan Peters), and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) celebrated the holiday by wearing homemade versions of their original Marvel Comics costumes, although Wanda explained her outfit as being that of a traditional Sokovian fortune teller. Meanwhile, Vision's Halloween costume was a green leotard with a yellow cape complete with a high collar and yellow shorts. Vision's general color scheme is ironically the same as Loki's, who also mainly wears green and yellow in Marvel Comics. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe's movies and TV shows, Loki's costume is more sophisticated and he wears "fine Asgardian leather", but he overall retains the same color palette, as well as his helmet with bendy horns that the God of Mischief is so fond of. Old Loki also wears a helmet with bendy horns to complete his classic look.
At first glance, Old Loki does resemble Vision in his Halloween costume but this is mainly because of their yellow and green outfits, which are, in the visual language of comic books, the colors of supervillains. Like Loki, the Vision was originally a bad guy; the Synthezoid was built by Ultron to help him destroy the Avengers, although Vision ended joining Earth's Mightiest Heroes and fell in love with the Scarlet Witch. For his part, Loki is always considered Thor's main enemy. Due to the limitations of printing comic books in the mid-20th century, Marvel relied on a shorthand to indicate who was a hero and who was a villain to readers, especially children. Red and blue were the primary colors generally worn by superheroes, like Spider-Man and Captain America, while purple and green were villainous colors worn by Green Goblin, Doctor Doom, and Kang the Conqueror.
There were exceptions to the primary color rule, like the Incredible Hulk, who has green skin and wears purple pants. Although the Hulk is considered a hero by fans, the gamma-powered goliath's green and purple color scheme indicates that he's feared and mistrusted by people within the Marvel Universe. Then there's someone like Quicksilver, who debuted as a villain, like the Vision. Originally, Quicksilver wore green and white when he was a member of Magneto's Masters of Evil but after Pietro became an Avenger and proved himself as a hero, his colors changed to blue and white. Magneto himself usually wears purple, which is another color considered villainous because it conveys royalty and power. Considering his purple and green attire, there's no doubt just by looking at him that Green Goblin is a supervillain.
Vision's comic book yellow and green look is garish, as evident by the Halloween costume tribute in WandaVision, and the MCU wisely toned his colors down, as they did to Loki, who is now more of an anti-hero. Meanwhile, Old Loki may prove to be the mastermind behind everything sinister within the Time Variance Authority. If he is, indeed, the true villain of Loki, then it's fitting, and a clever ode to the classic villain of Marvel Comics, that Old Loki is wearing the original costume of the God of Mischief, complete with big, bendy horns and green and yellow colors.
Loki streams new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.
