The magic of New Girl lies in its focus on "pure, unadulterated friendship." Whether it's the portrayal of Nick and Schmidt's petty arguments or the screwball adventures of Winston and Jess, few sitcoms manage to capture the chaotic energy of friendship in early adulthood so accurately.
Part of this comes down to the clash between so many quirky personalities throughout the series. Some of the show's best comedic moments were crafted by pitting hilariously incompatible characters together in scenarios that shouldn't have worked, yet somehow they did.
10 Jess And Coach Helped Each Other Grow
Jess and Coach got along just fine in the pilot, but then Damon Wayans Jr. had to leave the show to fulfill his contract in the sitcom Happy Endings. Upon his character's return, he'd forgotten all about Jess (even if they did watch the Bin Laden/Seal Team Six announcement together), and it doesn't help that he then only saw her as his "friend's girlfriend."
Never one to be deterred, Jess put in the work to finally become Coach's friend. It took time, but the pair gradually developed a close bond. Jess gradually helped Coach grow as a character, bringing out his sensitive side and introducing him to a career in teaching. They also both served as confidantes for the other's relationship woes.
9 Winston And Furguson Were A Devoted Pair
Is there any friendship purer than that between a man and his cat? When Winston first met Furguson, he was stealing him from his ex-girlfriend, Daisy, after discovering she cheated on him while he catsat. Winston reacted as only he would and got to work plotting how to kill his new furry companion in revenge.
There's rarely any coming back from planned murder, but once Winston is swayed by Furguson's feline charms, the pair became inseparable. Winston considered himself Furguson's father and showered him with sometimes alarming levels of affection. Pets rarely play such a prominent role in sitcoms, which only makes Furguson's funeral hurt all the more in season 7's "Where The Road Goes."
8 Reagan And Jess Started As Rivals
Season 6 of New Girl introduces an even newer new girl in temporary — some might even say better — roommate Reagan. The polar opposite to the bubbly, dorky, polka dot-obsessed Jess, Reagan is a cool and collected pharmaceutical salesperson with zero patience for nonsense.
By the time Jess returned, Reagan was seeing Jess’ ex. Any other show would have pitted the two against each other, yet the pair soon became friends. Despite her feelings for Nick, Jess served as Reagan's agony aunt for their relationship, treating viewers to a refreshing reminder that friendship is a powerful force.
7 Sam And Winston Celebrated Bird Day
Of all the guys in the loft, Sam seemed most fond of Winston during his two stints dating Jess. Sure, he was a little bewildered by his quirks, such as when he casually complimented Winston's bird shirt and is later gifted his own on what Winston dubs "Bird Day." Still, Sam also admitted early on that Winston is the only man in the group he feels threatened by.
Nobody predicted this friendship would outlast Jess and Sam's relationship. Yet if the final season's three-year time jump is anything to go by, the pair stayed in touch. Even though he'd long since split from Jess, Sam attended Furguson's funeral and even wore his bird shirt for the occasion. Though Winston had actually moved on from birds to fish, the gesture was a generous one.
6 Cece And Coach Got Off On The Wrong Foot
His confidence was knocked by his recent split from his ex, Malia, so Coach wasn't exactly at the top of his game when he first met Cece. After messaging his mom throughout their first date and then shooting Cece a lame "Happy Monday" text afterward, their mutual attraction quickly fizzled to nothing and left the pair at odds for several episodes.
Once things were less awkward, a very different dynamic blossomed between the two. Partners in crime from the moment they teamed up to spy on Jess' sister Abby, audiences didn't get to see enough of Coach and Cece's chemistry and inside jokes on the show.
5 Nick And Russell Could Have Been Enemies
Older, richer, and ten times more sophisticated, Russell (aka "Fancyman") is everything Nick claimed to hate when he debuted in season 1. Although initially very skeptical, Nick totally changed his perspective after first visiting Russell's home and falling in love with everything from his desk to his sweater.
Nick deeply respects Russell's opinions and went so far as to model his own office on Russell's years after his last visit. Even though their connection seemed pretty one-sided at times, Russell gave Nick plenty of useful advice and put in the effort to be friendly. This is one New Girl duo that could easily have been enemies but had they stayed in touch before Nick and Jess got back together, who knows how much Russell could have helped Nick develop.
4 Bearclaw And Jess Found Common Ground
Just three appearances were enough to solidify Josh Gad's Bearclaw as a legend in New Girl canon. Nick's kooky friend fell for Jess instantly, but she wasn't quite as keen, reacting with horror when Nick accidentally gave him her number.
Jess was just as unenthusiastic when she later attended an all-night party at Bearclaw's. Viewers were led to believe the pair had a one-night stand, but Jess revealed they bonded over their love for musicals and wrote their own about woodland creatures. It's a shame their new friendship only gets one episode to shine — the duo’s shared eccentricities are comedy gold, and fans deserved to see that full-length musical in action.
3 Schmidt And Robby Were An Unorthodox Duo
Cece dated Robby after Schmidt "White Fangs" her to end their relationship, and she couldn't have chosen someone more different. Robby is the ultimate nice guy, so, of course, Schmidt (frequently labeled a "douchebag") hated him from day one. His jealousy reached a boiling point in season 2's "Halloween" when he tried to head-butt him repeatedly.
Eventually, even Schmidt was won over by Robby’s easygoing nature. Bonded by losing Cece, their efforts to break up her arranged marriage were screwball comedy at its finest. The contrast between the pair’s personalities made them one of the show’s most unorthodox duos, and it's a mystery why the show didn’t utilize this chemistry more often.
2 Nick And Tran Understood Each Other
Out on a walk through the park to deal with his anger issues, Nick first stumbled upon Tran sat silently on a bench. This set the tone of their entire friendship — Tran sits there and radiates peace and wisdom while Nick projects everything he needs to hear upon his mentor/grandfather figure.
While their friendship isn't so much of a surprise, its longevity is. Nobody could have predicted that this chance encounter in season 2 would form such an impactful relationship. Tran helped smooth some of Nick’s spikier personality traits. In return, he secured a friend so dedicated that Nick even promised to try to get Tran's controversial poetry published in the penultimate episode.
1 Winston And Cece Were Soulmates
While Cece and Schmidt highlighted that opposites attract romantically, Cece and Winston proved that the same is true for friendship. Cece is headstrong and, honestly, much cooler than Winston. The first few seasons barely showed them interacting, and they even made meta-jokes about their supposed "classic Winston and Cece mess around," which Cece vehemently claimed to know nothing about.
But at some point, the "mess arounds" became real. The pair grew closer when Jess left for jury duty in season 5, to the point that they call each other "babe," and Cece made Winston her "bridesman." Winston definitely brought out Cece's playful side, and the pair was an absolute delight.
