After the shocking revelation of the fake Time-Keepers in Loki episode 4, the question of who the show’s real villain is once more extremely pertinent. Theories had previously suggested that Loki himself would be revealed to be behind the TVA, or that Kang the Conqueror would make his MCU debut unexpectedly early. But one new theory suggests a far less telegraphed possibility: what if it was Miss Minutes all along?
With the reveal of the android Time-Keepers, everything looks different in retrospect. The mystery of why the TVA scan for robots takes on a whole new meaning and the whole agenda behind the preservation of one timeline over all others suddenly feels entirely suspicious. Loki, it seems, has suddenly become a Wizard of Oz clone, and it’s surely no accident he and Sylvie were led to the Time-Keepers along a yellow-lit road. If Loki is Dorothy Gail, Mobius was the white rabbit, and Renslayer the Wicked Witch, who is behind the Great and Powerful Oz’s curtain?
One new theory, courtesy of TikTok user DreadPirateDad suggests that Miss Minutes is the real villain behind the Time-Keeper ruse. After all, it’s she that introduces the idea of the multiversal war and the danger of branches and as Loki has already established, time itself is the most terrifying power in the universe. Whoever controls it controls everything. The theory is based on the similar aesthetic and feel to puzzle video game Portal 2, and expands on that story's twist to suggest that the Time-Keepers did originally start the TVA but are long dead and Miss Minutes was simply left in charge with nobody else to answer to. When the job of managing the timelines became too hard, she turned to recruiting variants to bolster her ranks.
Miss Minutes was set up as a key character in Loki after her episode one debut, with suggestions she had a significant part to play in the show's events. Thus far, the adorable little clock has been only sparingly used, so something else must be coming. And Loki episode 2 already hinted at her powers by showing her not to be a typical recording when Loki interacted with her at his desk. Something was amiss there, and finding out she is more involved in the control of the timeline would fit: after all, what craves the order of time more than a device that can only run in linear time? And it would explain why everything in the TVA appears to be so old and run-down - when the Time-Keepers died, the upkeep of the place fell apart.
It may yet be that Ant-Man 3 villain Kang is introduced in the aftermath of the destruction of the Time-Keepers but his backstory does not fit with someone actively seeking to limit the manipulation of time. More fitting for the creation of three terrifying temporal overlords is someone with an agenda to appear bigger and more imposing than their true self in order to seize that control. That could well put the crosshairs firmly over Miss Minutes as the final two episodes of Loki reveal more secrets.
