Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Sets September Premiere Date

ABC sets an official premiere date for Grey's Anatomy season 18. Television's longest-running medical drama just won't quit, having survived countless cast changes and wild plot twists over the years. Through it all, Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey continues to lead the doctors of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital through their various trials and tribulations. Most recently, that included the coronavirus pandemic, which gave Grey's Anatomy its strangest and perhaps more surprising season yet. Grey's Anatomy season 17 concluded just last month after a delayed start due to the pandemic.

Despite the immense success of the Shonda Rhimes-created series, there was some speculation over whether Grey's Anatomy could be nearing its end during season 17. Meredith spent much of the 17 episodes battling COVID and catching up with lost loved ones (like Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd) on a metaphorical beach, and it looked like the show could be setting up an exit for her. In May, Pompeo signed a new contract to return for another year, which paved the way for ABC to renew Grey's Anatomy for season 18.

Now just a month and a half after the previous season came to a close, the network has revealed when fans can expect to return to Grey-Sloan. The official Grey's Anatomy social media account announced Thursday that season 18 will premiere on September 30 at 9/8c. This means the series will hold onto its usual Thursday night perch through the 2021-22 season.

Last fall, Grey's Anatomy was unable to return until November, so this late September premiere is much closer to normalcy. It isn't yet clear as to how many episodes season 18 will have. In addition to Pompeo, the last two original Grey's Anatomy stars, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr., will return for the new season. They will be joined by Kevin McKidd, Camilla Luddington, and Kim Raver. Grey's Anatomy season 17 saw a number of series regulars depart the show, most notably Jesse Williams and Giacomo Gianniotti.

Now the question is: Will Grey's Anatomy season 18 be its last? Pompeo's latest contract is just through the year, and it remains to be seen if she will re-sign at the end. Grey's Anatomy is still a strong performer for ABC, and it could easily continue on should the powers that be (and Pompeo) want it to. However, it might best to just take season 18 as it comes for now. Last year provided enough curveballs for Meredith and her fellow doctors, and there will surely be plenty more ahead as it is. It all kicks off in the fall.
