The handsome Jackson Avery was a staple in the hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy for 12 seasons right from season 6. Avery had been a fan-favorite - he was a quick-thinker, a devoted surgeon and father, and one of the later additions to the show who continued alongside the few original characters until he too had become a Grey's veteran.
But in spite of the love that Jackson received from dedicated fans, there were also those who were never particularly impressed by the character. These fans have been vocal on Reddit expressing opinions that go against the general popularity of the character.
10 Scenes Involving Jackson Lacked Sheen
Jackson had a great bromantic storyline with his mentor Mark Sloan, and fans also shipped him with April. However, following Japril's breakup, this fan feels that Jackson's scenes began to get lackluster and the character had no meaningful role within the narrative.
The Redditor goes as far as to wish that Avery was written out of the drama. Well, surely this fan would have got their wish since Jesse Williams indeed left the show in its latest season after 12 years on Grey's.
9 Not A Stand-Alone Character
Another unpopular opinion about this otherwise much-adored character states that Avery didn't work as a stand-alone character. He was always playing off other characters with whom he had a significant screen dynamic such as Mark or April, Lexie, and even Meredith or Cristina.
He was even fun to watch when he first found out about Richard dating his mother but apart from that, as an independent character, he fails to be a crowd-puller.
8 The Anti-Japril Rant
Jackson and April were one of the most beloved Grey's couples, and fans prayed hard for these two beautiful people to resolve their issues and get together.
In fact, the Grey's Gods might even have been privy to this prayer since the latest season very blatantly hinted at a possible reunion between April and Jackson as they both decided to move to Boston with their daughter. However, here is a fan who can't stop feeling that Japril were incompatible as a couple from the beginning, their passionate sexual encounters notwithstanding. They also ended up treating Matthew and Stephanie really bad and their own storyline was filled with friction and conflict as both acted whimsically.
7 Jackson Was Shallow & Privileged
Jackson took a long time to develop any depth of character and was depicted as somewhat shallow and superficial for the major part, fumes this fan.
The character, being Harper Avery's grandson, automatically represented privilege. He came from unimaginable wealth and apart from his romantic storyline with April, didn't have much to do. It was only much later that the writers experimented with his journey to find himself spiritually and even that was particularly half-hearted.
6 Toxic Avery, Also Bland & Meh
Avery's relationships with both Maggie and Stephanie highlighted the toxic shades in the character's personality, says this Redditor.
The fan also points out that Jackson got the pass because of his good looks and sex appeal but if he were stripped of those, all that would be left of him would be a rather boring, bland sort of character.
5 He Was Obnoxious During The Merger
When Avery first sauntered into Seattle Grace, he was one of the obnoxious Mercy West crew, rude, insolent, and arrogant. Of course, with time, he became more sincere and over the years, he gradually came to represent the old guard on the show.
But his character development was too abrupt, the fan opines, and in any case, it didn't take away from the fact that he was prone to insolence, and was quite thoroughly unlikeable at first.
4 Jackson Became More Unlikable With Each Season
Jackson in the last few seasons had a very unstable, weak arc as he jumped from one brief romance to another, points out this fan. He also usually ended up hurting the women he was involved with and then appeared to have been victimized himself, rants this fan.
He opened up to some random woman whom he had met during his journey to seek himself after being saved from almost inevitable death while the poor girl Nisha died tragically. He was dating Maggie at the time but disappeared on her without even bothering to inform her.
3 Saddled With Eye-Candy Storylines
Speaking of Maggie, this fan conjures up an elaborate scenario wherein Jackson's character could have had better development instead of being saddled with the purely eye-candy storylines or the occasional Catherine Fox arcs thrown into the mix.
The Redditor plays with the idea that Jackson could have been given more meaningful growth if he had failed the boards instead of April. This disaster would have brought to the fore his insecurities, especially coming from a high-profile family of surgeons and bogged with so many expectations.
2 Victim Of Lazy Writing
Another opinion that goes against the trend of loving Jackson states that he was a victim of lazy writing. Not only was he paired with people who made no sense with him, i.e. Maggie, but most of his storylines also failed to grab eyeballs.
Fans seemed to have lost interest in this otherwise attractive character who practically contributed nothing towards the seasons. The writers themselves seemed to have given up on him as he hovered around, with even Catherine Fox having more to contribute in terms of the business dynamics than Jackson himself.
1 Yang & Avery Would Have Been Epic
Finally, this fan has a very unpopular opinion -Avery would have made a better couple with Cristina Yang than he did with April, it seems.
Fans might recall that Yang and Avery shared a very brief kiss in season 6 but the former was then involved with Owen, so the kiss led to nothing. But it is interesting to imagine these two young people together as a power couple, one with the money and the other with the snark and the brilliance.
